Ingredients & steps
Ingredient-HonestIngredients
- 1 cup (8oz) Cold Brew Concentrate (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) Naked Whey (Unflavored) protein powder
- 4oz milk or milk alternative of choice
- 2 tbsp Vanilla-Maple Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
- Ice, as needed
Steps
- 1.Add the Naked Whey to a shaker bottle along with the milk first -- mixing powder into liquid before the coffee goes in is the single biggest trick to avoiding clumps.
- 2.Add the 2 tbsp Vanilla-Maple Syrup to the shaker as well, then shake for 15-20 seconds until completely smooth with no powder streaks.
- 3.Fill a glass with ice, pour in the cup of cold brew concentrate, then pour the protein-milk-syrup mixture over it.
- 4.Stir to combine and serve immediately with a straw.

This is the Ingredient-Honest build of our Vanilla Whey Protein Cold Brew — same cold-brew-plus-vanilla-syrup foundation, but built around Naked Whey (Unflavored) instead of a flavored vanilla whey tub, since no flavored protein powder we’ve checked clears our standard yet. The flavor still comes through in full: it’s carried entirely by the real Vanilla-Maple Syrup, the same syrup behind our Ingredient-Honest Vanilla Cream Cold Brew and Ingredient-Honest Vanilla Latte. See the Ingredient-Honest Registry’s “Protein powders” section and the full 16-point standard for the research behind that swap.
Why Unflavored Whey, Not “Vanilla Whey”
The Standard recipe this builds on calls for “whey protein powder, vanilla flavor” — a natural choice, since the drink is explicitly a vanilla cold brew. The problem is that every flavored vanilla whey we’ve checked so far fails somewhere: added maltodextrin, an unqualified “natural flavor,” or (most commonly) a stevia/monk-fruit sweetening system that isn’t one of the five sweeteners our own Sweeteners Compared page grades as Pass. Rather than drop the vanilla flavor or waive the rule, this recipe builds it entirely from the Vanilla-Maple Syrup and keeps the protein powder itself plain — the same real “build the flavor from a separately-verified clean syrup rather than a flavored protein powder” discipline the registry calls for across this whole wave of recipes.
Swapping the Milk? Here’s the Honest Read on Each Option
Milk swap-ins here get graded against the same bar as everything else on this site, and that verdict doesn’t change by flavor — a clean almond milk is clean whether it’s going into this vanilla whey protein cold brew or any other recipe. Rather than reprint the full rundown on every page, we keep the actual brand-by-brand findings in one place: see the Ingredient-Honest Registry for exactly which oat, soy, almond, rice, and dairy picks Pass, Fail, or carry a condition — including the specific reason each failing brand doesn’t make the cut. Short version for this recipe: stick with Kirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk above, or swap in one of the registry’s Pass picks instead.
Building the Drink
- Make a batch of Vanilla-Maple Syrup ahead of time if you don’t have one — it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
- Add 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) of Naked Whey (Unflavored) and 4oz of milk to a shaker bottle first. Powder into liquid, not the other way around, is what prevents clumping.
- Add 2 tbsp of the vanilla-maple syrup to the same shaker and shake for 15-20 seconds until fully smooth.
- Fill a glass with ice, pour in 1 cup (8oz) of Cold Brew Concentrate, then pour the protein mixture over it. Stir and serve with a straw.
Assumptions: homemade Cold Brew Concentrate at $0.86/8oz (this site’s own standing per-cup figure), Naked Whey (Unflavored) at ~$1.80/serving (2 scoops, 30g) per Protein Powder Brands Compared, dairy milk, and a homemade Vanilla-Maple Syrup batch. Café protein add-on pricing varies by chain and city — $6.75 is representative of what Dutch Bros-, Dunkin-, and Peet’s-style protein cold brews commonly run once the add-on is included. Savings per drink: $3.31 against the café version. At 5 drinks a week over this site’s standard 48-week year (240 drinks), that’s roughly $794/year back in your pocket.
Why This Costs More Than the Standard Version (and Why That’s Fine)
This version runs $1.31 more per drink than our Standard Vanilla Whey Protein Cold Brew, because Naked Whey (~$1.80/serving) costs more than a typical flavored-whey tub (~$0.88/scoop), and the real maple-vanilla syrup costs a bit more than a cane-sugar vanilla syrup. You’re still saving well over $3 a drink against a café protein cold brew, with a protein powder that’s a single verified ingredient rather than a flavored blend carrying its own sweetener question mark. Pick this tier for that — the Standard version is still the cheaper way to get this drink at home.
Swaps & Notes
- Want a different protein source? Naked Casein is also a Pass and single-ingredient — it’s thicker and more shake-like, which some people prefer here. Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (Plain) is a Pass too, but carries less protein per serving (18g vs. Naked Whey’s 25g) and is an incomplete protein, not a direct nutritional swap.
- No vanilla-maple syrup made yet? A splash of pure vanilla extract (also a Pass per the registry) works in a pinch, though you’ll lose the rounder, cooked-syrup flavor the real batch adds.
- Protein total: this drink carries about 25g of protein from the Naked Whey serving alone, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of dairy milk — call it ~29g total.

FAQ
Why not just use a flavored vanilla whey like the Standard recipe does?
Every flavored vanilla whey we’ve checked so far fails our standard on something — usually a stevia/monk-fruit sweetening system, sometimes an unqualified “natural flavor” or added maltodextrin. Building the vanilla flavor from a real, separately-verified syrup instead of a flavored protein powder is how this recipe keeps its badge honest.
Does this taste less “vanilla” than the Standard version, since the whey itself isn’t flavored?
No — the Vanilla-Maple Syrup carries the full vanilla flavor on its own, the same way it does in our non-protein Ingredient-Honest Vanilla Cream Cold Brew. The protein powder’s job here is protein, not flavor.
How much protein is actually in this?
About 25g from the Naked Whey serving, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of dairy milk — around 29g total. That number drops if you swap to a lower-protein milk alternative like almond milk.
