Uses Vanilla Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup (8oz) Cold Brew Concentrate (homemade or store-bought)
    • 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, vanilla flavor
    • 4oz milk or milk alternative of choice
    • 2 tbsp Vanilla Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • Ice, as needed

    Steps

    1. 1.Add the whey protein powder to a shaker bottle along with the milk first -- mixing powder into liquid before the coffee goes in is the single biggest trick to avoiding clumps.
    2. 2.Add the 2 tbsp Vanilla Syrup to the shaker as well, then shake for 15-20 seconds until completely smooth with no powder streaks.
    3. 3.Fill a glass with ice, pour in the cup of cold brew concentrate, then pour the protein-milk-syrup mixture over it.
    4. 4.Stir to combine and serve immediately with a straw.

Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Ingredient-Honest" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. If you're managing diabetes, a caffeine sensitivity, pregnancy, or another condition, check with a doctor or dietitian before making a recipe part of your routine. Read the full disclaimer.

This is the flavored, whey-specific sibling to our plain Proffee recipe — same cold-brew-plus-protein foundation, but built around a real Vanilla Syrup batch instead of a splash of extract, and written specifically for whey rather than “whatever protein powder you have.” Whey is the easiest protein to get right in a cold, shaken drink, which is why it’s the default here.

    Why Whey Specifically

Whey dissolves faster and grittier-free than almost any other protein powder when it’s cold-shaken, which is exactly the format this drink uses. It’s also the protein with the most complete amino acid profile per gram — if your goal is a genuinely useful post-workout protein hit and not just “some protein,” whey is the reference point the other powders in this line of recipes get compared against.

    Building the Drink

    1. Make a batch of Vanilla Syrup ahead of time if you don’t have one — it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
    2. Add 1 scoop of whey protein and the 4oz of milk to a shaker bottle first. Powder into liquid, not the other way around, is what actually prevents clumping.
    3. Add the 2 tbsp of vanilla syrup to the same shaker and shake for 15-20 seconds until fully smooth.
    4. Fill a glass with ice, pour in 1 cup of cold brew concentrate, then pour the protein mixture over it. Stir and serve with a straw.
Home Vanilla Protein Cold Brew vs. Café Protein Cold Brew
Café-style protein cold brew (with a protein add-on)~$6.75
Home vanilla whey protein cold brew~$2.13
    Savings per drink$4.62

Assumptions: homemade cold brew concentrate at this site’s standard $16/lb bean pricing, whey protein from a 5lb Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard tub at ~$0.88/scoop (see the calorie comment in this page’s frontmatter for the full per-tub math), dairy milk, and a homemade Vanilla Syrup batch. Café protein add-on pricing varies by chain and city — $6.75 is representative of what Dutch Bros-, Dunkin-, and Peet’s-style protein cold brews commonly run once the protein add-on is included, not a claim about any one specific chain’s menu item. At 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,109/year back in your pocket.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Want a different protein source? See our Casein Cold Brew Protein Shake (thicker, more shake-like), Vanilla Collagen Protein Cold Brew (dissolves clear, lower protein-per-scoop), or Plant-Based Protein Mocha (pea protein, grittier — blend instead of shake). They aren’t interchangeable 1:1; see each recipe’s honest note on texture and mixability.
    • No vanilla syrup made yet? A splash of vanilla extract and a sweetener of choice works in a pinch, same as our plain Proffee recipe — you’ll lose the rounder, cooked-sugar flavor the real syrup adds.
    • Protein total: this drink carries about 24g of protein from the whey scoop alone, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of dairy milk — call it ~28g total.
    • Want a verified-clean protein powder? See our Ingredient-Honest Vanilla Whey Protein Cold Brew — same syrup idea, rebuilt with real Vanilla-Maple Syrup and Naked Whey (Unflavored) instead of a flavored whey tub.

    FAQ

Does whey protein curdle in cold brew?

Not if you mix it into the milk first, not directly into the cold brew. Powder-then-milk-then-syrup-then-coffee, in that order, avoids nearly all clumping.

How much protein is actually in this?

About 24g from the whey scoop, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of dairy milk — around 28g total. That number drops if you swap to a lower-protein milk alternative like almond milk.

Can I use a flavored whey instead of plain/vanilla plus the syrup?

Yes — a vanilla-flavored whey plus less (or no) syrup works fine, it’ll just taste more artificially “protein shake”-forward than the real cooked-sugar syrup does. Cut the syrup to 1 tbsp if you go this route to avoid an overly sweet drink.
