    Ingredients & steps

    Ingredient-Honest

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

    Ingredients

    • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
    • 8oz milk
    • 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) Naked Whey (Unflavored) protein powder
    • 2 tbsp Cocoa-Maple Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)

    Steps

    1. 1.Whisk the Naked Whey into the cold milk in a separate cup or jar until fully smooth -- do this before any heat is involved, since protein dissolves easier cold and blending it into hot milk risks clumping.
    2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
    3. 3.Stir 2 tbsp of Cocoa-Maple Sauce into the hot espresso until fully combined.
    4. 4.Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-sauce mixture.
    5. 5.Serve immediately.

Milk options — the Ingredient-Honest read

We hold every milk option to the same bar as the rest of this recipe — here's exactly where each one stands, not just the ones that pass.

    • PassKirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk — organic and rBST-free -- already clears Criterion 16 outright, no change needed
    • ConditionalWhole dairy milk (regular, non-organic) — needs to be organic and rBST-free to fully qualify -- this recipe's own default, Kirkland Organic A2, already is
    • Conditional2% reduced-fat dairy milk — same as regular whole dairy -- needs to be organic and rBST-free to fully qualify
    • PassOat milk (Elmhurst 1925 Unsweetened Milked Oats) — filtered water, whole grain oats, and salt, nothing else
    • PassAlmond milk (Elmhurst 1925 Unsweetened Milked Almonds) — filtered water and almonds only
    • PassAlmond milk (Califia Farms Organic Unsweetened Almondmilk) — water, organic almonds, and sea salt only
    • PassAlmond milk (Malk Unsweetened Almond Milk) — filtered water, almonds, and Himalayan pink salt only
    • PassSoy milk, unsweetened (Unsweetened Edensoy Organic) — purified water and organic soybeans only
    • FailsRice milk, unsweetened (e.g. Rice Dream Unsweetened Original) — added oil and/or a gum -- every commercial rice milk we checked uses at least one; no clean commercial option currently exists

Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Ingredient-Honest" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. If you're managing diabetes, a caffeine sensitivity, pregnancy, or another condition, check with a doctor or dietitian before making a recipe part of your routine. Read the full disclaimer.

This is the Ingredient-Honest build of our Protein Mocha (Chocolate Whey Latte) — the same real Cocoa-Maple Sauce behind our Ingredient-Honest Mocha, plus Naked Whey (Unflavored) blended into the milk instead of “a scoop of whey protein powder, chocolate or vanilla.” See the Ingredient-Honest Registry’s “Protein powders” section and the full 16-point standard for exactly what that swap is checked against.

    What “Ingredient-Honest” Means Here

Two separate ingredients get checked and swapped here, not one. The sauce side is already solved — real maple syrup and real unsweetened cocoa, no refined cane sugar, same as our regular Ingredient-Honest Mocha. The protein side is the new piece: Naked Whey (Unflavored) is a single ingredient (grass-fed whey protein concentrate), with nothing added for flavor or texture.

Why not a flavored chocolate whey, since this drink is already chocolate-flavored? Because every flavored protein powder we’ve checked so far fails somewhere. Levels’ own Pure Chocolate SKU is the clearest example: real cocoa powder, no artificial dyes, nothing alarming on the label — and it still fails, because it’s sweetened entirely with stevia leaf extract and monk fruit extract, and per our own Sweeteners Compared page, that blend isn’t one of the five sweeteners (maple, honey, raw cane sugar, coconut sugar, dates) this site grades as Pass. Rather than reach for a flavored powder that fails on sweetener alone, we build the chocolate flavor entirely from the already-verified Cocoa-Maple Sauce and keep the protein powder plain.

Swapping the Milk? Here’s the Honest Read on Each Option

Milk swap-ins here get graded against the same bar as everything else on this site, and that verdict doesn’t change by flavor — a clean almond milk is clean whether it’s going into this protein mocha (chocolate whey latte) or any other recipe. Rather than reprint the full rundown on every page, we keep the actual brand-by-brand findings in one place: see the Ingredient-Honest Registry for exactly which oat, soy, almond, rice, and dairy picks Pass, Fail, or carry a condition — including the specific reason each failing brand doesn’t make the cut. Short version for this recipe: stick with Kirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk above, or swap in one of the registry’s Pass picks instead.

Make the Sauce First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Cocoa-Maple Sauce in the fridge — a 15-minute batch that makes about 10 drinks’ worth and keeps for 2 weeks. Make that first if you haven’t, then come back here.

    Building the Latte

    1. Whisk 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) of Naked Whey (Unflavored) into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
    2. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your cup, or brew strong coffee.
    3. Stir in 2 tbsp of Cocoa-Maple Sauce while the espresso is still hot.
    4. Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-sauce mix.
Café Protein Mocha vs. Standard Protein Mocha vs. This Version
Café mocha with a protein add-on~$7.25
Standard Protein Mocha (home, mixed-brand whey)~$1.81
    Home Ingredient-Honest Protein Mocha~$3.13

Assumptions: grande-size café comparison, national-average pricing for a mocha plus protein-powder add-on, dairy milk, Naked Whey (Unflavored) at ~$1.80/serving (2 scoops, 30g) per Protein Powder Brands Compared, and a homemade Cocoa-Maple Sauce batch. Savings per drink: $4.12 against the café version. At 5 protein mochas a week over this site’s standard 48-week year (240 drinks), that’s roughly $989/year back in your pocket.

Why This Costs More Than the Standard Version (and Why That’s Fine)

This version runs $1.32 more per drink than our Standard Protein Mocha, because Naked Whey (~$1.80/serving) costs more than a typical bulk-tub whey blend (~$0.88/scoop), and the real maple-and-cocoa sauce costs a little more than a cane-sugar mocha sauce. You’re still saving over $4 a drink against a café protein mocha, with a protein powder and sauce you could both read off a label without a dictionary. Pick this tier because you want that — the Standard version is still the cheaper way to get a protein mocha at home.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients — less milk (4oz cold, shaken with the protein, instead of 8oz steamed).
    • Casein or collagen instead of whey? Naked Casein is also a Pass and mixes thicker; Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (Plain) is a Pass too but carries less protein per serving (18g) and is an incomplete protein, so it’s not a gram-for-gram swap.
    • Protein total: about 25g from the Naked Whey serving, plus roughly 8g from the 8oz of dairy milk — around 33g total (29g on the iced 4oz-milk version).

    Recipe Card Summary

Ingredient-Honest Protein Mocha (Chocolate Whey Latte)

    • 2oz espresso + 8oz steamed milk (Naked Whey blended in) + 2 tbsp Cocoa-Maple Sauce
    • Prep time: 5 minutes · Total: 5 minutes
    • Cost: ~$3.13/drink vs. ~$7.25 café protein mocha · ~33g protein

    FAQ

Why does this cost more than the Standard Protein Mocha if both use “protein powder”?

Because the Standard version prices a typical bulk-tub protein blend (~$0.88/scoop), while this version uses Naked Whey specifically (~$1.80/serving) — a single-ingredient, verified-clean pick, not a cheaper mixed-ingredient tub. You’re paying for ingredient verification, not a bigger scoop.

Can I use a flavored chocolate protein powder instead, since the drink is already chocolate-flavored?

Not and keep the Ingredient-Honest badge — every flavored chocolate/vanilla protein powder we’ve checked so far fails on its sweetening system (stevia/monk fruit blends) or an added flavor/gum. Build the chocolate flavor from the Cocoa-Maple Sauce instead and keep the protein powder plain.

Does steaming the protein-milk mixture break down the protein?

No — steamed milk tops out around 150-160°F, far below the temperatures that would meaningfully denature the protein’s nutritional value. That’s true for Naked Whey the same as it is for any whey protein.
