About Be Your Own Barista (and How to Reach Us)

No bios, no headshots — just the math, the standards, and a real inbox. Here's who we are and why this site exists.

You've probably landed here from a footer link or a "who wrote this?" moment. Fair question. Here's the honest answer.

    Why this site exists

The café line adds up. A daily latte habit runs somewhere north of a thousand dollars a year for most people — we do the actual math on thatelsewhere on this site, receipts and all — and most of what you're paying for is rent, labor, and a paper cup, not the coffee itself. None of that has to apply to your kitchen counter.

So the promise here is simple: quit the café line, make better drinks at home for a fraction of the cost, and do it alongside people who'll trade gear with you instead of gatekeeping it. That's the whole pitch. Not "coffee is a lifestyle," not "you need a $3,000 machine to be a real barista" — just better drinks, honestly costed, at a price that actually makes sense.

We got into this because the alternative online is usually one of two things: content that's secretly just trying to sell you the most expensive machine in the review, or forums where asking a beginner question gets you a lecture about grind distribution. Neither of those is useful if you're standing in your kitchen trying to figure out whether a $40 moka pot or a $400 machine is the right call for you. We built this to be the thing we wanted when we were figuring it out ourselves.

    What we actually do here

Three things, and we're building them in this order on purpose:

    • Honest, math-first content. Every savings claim on this site shows its work — the assumptions, the per-cup cost, the comparison. We'd rather give you a real number you can argue with than a vague "you'll save so much money!" We also run our ownIngredient-Honest standard on recipes, which grades every ingredient — including the "optional" ones — against a fixed set of criteria and shows you the result, pass or fail, right on the page.
    • Buying guides that respect your budget. A $150 setup and a $2,000 setup both get taken seriously here. Some of our links are affiliate links — they never change your price, and which product wins a comparison is decided before we check whether it pays a commission, not after. Full details are in our affiliate disclosure.
    • A place to trade gear, not just buy it new. This part is newer and still being built out. The long-term plan is an on-site marketplace and community where people can buy, sell, and trade home-café gear directly with each other, instead of everything going straight to a landfill or a drawer. If that's live yet, you'll see it in the main nav — if not, it's coming.

    What "The BYOB Team" means

You won't find individual names, bios, or headshots on this site — every article is credited to "The BYOB Team," and that's deliberate, not evasive. We're a small, hands-on operation, not a faceless content farm running the same templated buying guide across fifty different domains. We just think the thing worth trusting here is the standard behind the content — the math, the Ingredient-Honest grading, the fact that we tell you when a $30 pick is genuinely good enough — not a personal brand built around whoever happens to be typing.

If that changes down the road, we'll say so. For now, when you read something on this site, you're reading something a small team actually researched, costed out, and stands behind.
