Ingredients & steps
Ingredient-HonestWritten hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 8oz milk
- 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) Naked Whey (Unflavored) protein powder
- 2 tbsp Pumpkin-Maple Base (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
Steps
- 1.Whisk the Naked Whey into the cold milk in a separate cup until fully smooth, before any heat is involved.
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
- 3.Stir in 2 tbsp of the Pumpkin-Maple Base while the espresso is hot, whisking until fully combined -- it takes a bit more stirring than a syrup since it's thicker.
- 4.Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-base mixture.
- 5.Finish with a light dusting of cinnamon if you want the presentation. Serve immediately.

Milk options — the Ingredient-Honest read

- PassKirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk — organic and rBST-free -- already clears Criterion 16 outright, no change needed
- ConditionalWhole dairy milk (regular, non-organic) — needs to be organic and rBST-free to fully qualify -- this recipe's own default, Kirkland Organic A2, already is
- Conditional2% reduced-fat dairy milk — same as regular whole dairy -- needs to be organic and rBST-free to fully qualify
- PassOat milk (Elmhurst 1925 Unsweetened Milked Oats) — filtered water, whole grain oats, and salt, nothing else
- PassAlmond milk (Elmhurst 1925 Unsweetened Milked Almonds) — filtered water and almonds only

- PassSoy milk, unsweetened (Unsweetened Edensoy Organic) — purified water and organic soybeans only

This is the Ingredient-Honest build of our High-Protein Pumpkin Spice Latte — the same no-syrup Pumpkin-Maple Base behind our Ingredient-Honest Pumpkin Spice Latte, plus Naked Whey (Unflavored) blended into the milk instead of “a scoop of whey protein powder, vanilla or unflavored.” See the Ingredient-Honest Registry’s “Protein powders” section and the full 16-point standard for what that swap means.
What “Ingredient-Honest” Means Here
Real canned pumpkin, real maple syrup, whole milk, spices, vanilla extract — no gums, no stabilizers, no natural-flavor blends standing in for actual pumpkin. That’s the Pumpkin-Maple Base’s own standard, unchanged from our regular Ingredient-Honest PSL. What’s new here is the protein side: Naked Whey (Unflavored) is a single ingredient, nothing added, which clears the bar a typical “vanilla or unflavored” whey blend can’t guarantee without a label check.
Why not a flavored vanilla whey, which would seem to fit a PSL? Because the flavored whey SKUs we’ve checked rely on a stevia/monk-fruit sweetening system that isn’t one of the five sweeteners our own Sweeteners Compared page grades as Pass, or carry an unqualified “natural flavor.” The Pumpkin-Maple Base already does all the flavor work here — keeping the protein powder plain is what keeps the badge honest, and it also sidesteps the Standard recipe’s own warning that a chocolate-flavored protein muddies the pumpkin flavor; an unflavored one doesn’t have that problem at all.
Swapping the Milk? Here’s the Honest Read on Each Option
Milk swap-ins here get graded against the same bar as everything else on this site, and that verdict doesn’t change by flavor — a clean almond milk is clean whether it’s going into this high-protein pumpkin spice latte or any other recipe. Rather than reprint the full rundown on every page, we keep the actual brand-by-brand findings in one place: see the Ingredient-Honest Registry for exactly which oat, soy, almond, rice, and dairy picks Pass, Fail, or carry a condition — including the specific reason each failing brand doesn’t make the cut. Short version for this recipe: stick with Kirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk above, or swap in one of the registry’s Pass picks instead.
Make the Base First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Pumpkin-Maple Base in the fridge — a 5-minute, no-cook batch that makes about 6 drinks’ worth and keeps about a week. Make that first if you haven’t, then come back here.
Building the Latte
- Whisk 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) of Naked Whey (Unflavored) into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
- Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your cup, or brew strong coffee.
- Stir in 2 tbsp of the Pumpkin-Maple Base while the espresso is hot — it’s thicker than a syrup, so give it a good 15-20 seconds of stirring to fully combine.
- Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-base mix. Finish with a dusting of cinnamon if you want the full presentation.
Assumptions: grande-size café comparison, national-average Starbucks-style seasonal pricing plus a protein-powder add-on charge, dairy milk, Naked Whey (Unflavored) at ~$1.80/serving (2 scoops, 30g) per Protein Powder Brands Compared, and a homemade Pumpkin-Maple Base batch. Savings per drink: $4.28 against the café version. Like our regular Ingredient-Honest Pumpkin Spice Latte and the Standard high-protein version, this one has a real seasonal ceiling on the café side — roughly 9-10 weeks left in a typical fall season from early October. At 3 protein PSLs a week through the rest of the season, that’s about 27-30 drinks and roughly $116-$128 saved for the season.
Why This Costs More Than the Standard Version (and Why That’s Fine)
This version runs $1.19 more per drink than our Standard High-Protein Pumpkin Spice Latte — Naked Whey (~$1.80/serving) costs more than a typical bulk-tub whey (~$0.88/scoop), and real pumpkin and maple cost more than a sugar syrup. You’re still saving well over $4 a drink against a café protein PSL, with both the protein powder and the flavor base built from ingredients you could read off a label without a dictionary. This is the tier to pick if that verification matters more to you than shaving the last dollar off the cost — the Standard version is still the cheaper route to a protein PSL at home.
Swaps & Notes
- Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients for less milk (4oz cold, shaken with the protein, instead of 8oz steamed).
- Want it dairy-free? Oat milk holds up especially well with pumpkin spice’s warm baking-spice flavor — use the milk-swap options above (Elmhurst Unsweetened Milked Oats is the Pass pick).
- Protein total: about 25g from the Naked Whey serving, plus roughly 8g from the 8oz of dairy milk — around 33g total (29g on the iced 4oz-milk version).

FAQ
Does the protein powder clash with the pumpkin spice flavor?
Not with Naked Whey specifically — it’s unflavored, so the base’s real pumpkin and warm spice notes come through exactly as they do in the non-protein Ingredient-Honest PSL. A chocolate-flavored protein is the one combination the Standard recipe warns against; that issue doesn’t apply here since this tier never uses a flavored powder.
How long does the season last for this one?
Same seasonal window as our regular Ingredient-Honest Pumpkin Spice Latte — roughly a 9-10 week fall run at most chains, though nothing stops you from making the base and this drink year-round at home.
Can I use Naked Casein instead of Naked Whey here?
Yes — it’s also a Pass and single-ingredient. It thickens a bit more than whey, which some people like in a fall-spiced drink like this one.
