Uses Chai Concentrate — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardWritten hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 4oz Chai Concentrate (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
- 4oz milk, steamed or frothed
- 1 tbsp Vanilla Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge; this is a half-dose, not the full 2 tbsp a plain Vanilla Latte uses)
- Optional: 1-2oz brewed espresso, for a dirty vanilla chai
- Optional: a dusting of cinnamon for topping
Steps
- 1.Make a batch each of Chai Concentrate and Vanilla Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- the concentrate keeps about a week, the vanilla syrup a full 2 weeks.
- 2.Warm 4oz of the chai concentrate in a small saucepan or the microwave until hot, but not boiling.
- 3.Stir in 1 tbsp of the vanilla syrup while the concentrate is still hot.
- 4.Steam or froth 4oz of milk to about 150°F.
- 5.Combine the warm concentrate-and-vanilla mixture and the steamed milk in your cup and stir. If you're making it dirty, pull a shot of espresso and add it to the cup before the milk.
- 6.Dust with cinnamon if using. Serve immediately.

Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. A vanilla chai is exactly what it sounds like — our regular Chai Latte with real vanilla stirred in — and it’s arguably the single most-ordered variation on a chai latte at real cafés, ahead of the plain version. Unlike every other combo on this site, chai isn’t built from “espresso plus two syrups”: the concentrate itself carries the tea, spice, and sweetener, so this recipe adds a half-dose of Vanilla Syrup on top rather than the full 2 tbsp a plain Vanilla Latte uses — a full dose on top of an already-sweet concentrate would push the drink into candy territory.
Make Both Bases First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar each of Chai Concentrate and Vanilla Syrup in the fridge. The concentrate keeps about a week and makes about 6 drinks’ worth; the vanilla syrup keeps a full 2 weeks and makes about 12. If you’re building your first jar of either, go make that one first, then come back here.
Building the Drink
- Warm 4oz of the chai concentrate in a small saucepan or the microwave until hot, but not boiling.
- Stir in 1 tbsp of the vanilla syrup while the concentrate is still hot.
- Steam or froth 4oz of milk to about 150°F (see How to Make a Latte at Home if you’re new to the technique).
- Combine the warm concentrate-and-vanilla mixture and the steamed milk in your cup and stir. Dust with cinnamon if you want it.
Both bases together cost about $2.10 total to make (~$1.02 for the Chai Concentrate batch, ~$1.08 for the Vanilla Syrup batch), and since this recipe only uses a half-dose (1 tbsp) of the vanilla syrup per drink, a single vanilla syrup batch stretches across roughly 24 vanilla chais before it runs out — well past the 6 drinks the chai concentrate batch itself provides.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a vanilla chai latte, dairy milk, black tea bags and ground spices plus vanilla syrup at typical grocery pricing. At 5 vanilla chais a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,303/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Want It Dirty? Add a Shot of Espresso
A “dirty vanilla chai” is exactly this drink plus a shot of espresso — nothing else changes. Pull a double shot (about 2oz) and add it to your cup before the milk, same as the plain Chai Latte’s dirty variant. It’s the one point in this recipe that genuinely needs an espresso machine (or a moka pot / strong AeroPress shot as a stand-in) — the concentrate, vanilla, and milk stay exactly the same.
Swaps & Notes
- No espresso machine and don’t want one? This is a genuinely complete drink with zero coffee equipment involved — skip the dirty variant entirely.
- Only have one of the two bases made? If you’re out of vanilla syrup, make the plain Chai Latte instead. If you’re out of chai concentrate, make a plain Vanilla Latte instead rather than improvising with only one on hand.
- Want more vanilla? Bump it to a full 2 tbsp if you want a stronger vanilla presence — just know it shifts the drink toward “vanilla latte with chai spices” rather than “chai with a vanilla accent,” and adds about $0.045 and 33.5 calories more per drink.
- Watching sugar? See the Sugar-Free Vanilla Chai Latte or Ingredient-Honest Vanilla Chai Latte for lower-sugar or real-maple builds.
- Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients to switch — less milk (3oz cold over ice instead of 4oz steamed), same method as the plain Chai Latte’s iced build.

FAQ
Why does this use a half-dose of vanilla syrup instead of the full 2 tbsp every other combo uses?
Every other combo on this site splits 1 tbsp of flavor A and 1 tbsp of flavor B against the same 2oz espresso and 8oz milk as a plain latte. Chai doesn’t work that way — the concentrate itself already carries tea, spice, and sugar in a stronger, more concentrated form, so stacking a full 2 tbsp of vanilla syrup on top would make the drink oversweet. A half-dose keeps the vanilla as an accent rather than a second full flavor.
Do I need an espresso machine to make this?
No — that’s the whole point of the base recipe. You only need espresso (or strong coffee) if you’re making it dirty, exactly like the plain Chai Latte.
Is vanilla chai a real drink, or is this a made-up combo?
It’s real, and arguably the single most common way chai lattes are actually ordered — most major chain and café menus either include vanilla by default in their chai syrup blend or offer it as the standard add-in.
Do I need to make both bases every time?
No — each is its own recipe. The chai concentrate keeps about a week and the vanilla syrup a full 2 weeks, so this page is just the assembly step once both are made.
