Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp mascarpone cheese
- 1 tsp instant espresso powder
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of fine sea salt
Steps
- 1.Whisk the water, sugar, cocoa powder, and instant espresso powder together in a small saucepan BEFORE turning on the heat -- cocoa clumps badly if it hits hot liquid without being fully whisked in cold first.
- 2.Set over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, whisking constantly -- cocoa scorches easily on the bottom of the pan if left alone.
- 3.Simmer 4-5 minutes, still whisking occasionally, until smooth and slightly thickened.
- 4.Remove from heat and whisk in the mascarpone cheese a spoonful at a time until fully smooth and melted into the warm sauce.
- 5.Stir in the salt and vanilla extract. Let cool completely -- it thickens more as it cools.
- 6.Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 1 week (real mascarpone is dairy, so this keeps shorter than our sugar-only syrups). Give it a whisk or shake before using -- it can separate slightly. Use 2 tbsp per drink, stirred into hot espresso before adding milk.
Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Ingredient-Honest" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. This is the sauce behind our Tiramisu Latte — and it’s built like a real dessert sauce, not a flavored syrup, the same way our Mocha Sauce skips the syrup method for real chocolate. Tiramisu’s actual flavor comes from three things together: coffee, cocoa, and mascarpone’s rich, tangy creaminess — so this sauce carries all three, with a spoonful of real mascarpone whisked into a simmered cocoa-and-espresso base.
Why This Isn’t Just a Mocha Sauce With Extra Steps
Our Mocha Sauce is cocoa and sugar, full stop. This sauce adds two things that make it genuinely tiramisu rather than a coffee-forward mocha: real mascarpone cheese, whisked in at the end for the dessert’s signature creamy tang, and instant espresso powder stirred in alongside the cocoa for a more concentrated coffee note than the drink’s own espresso shot provides alone. Skip either one and you’re back to a mocha with a coffee accent, not tiramisu.
The Sauce
Whisk 3/4 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tbsp cocoa powder, and 1 tsp instant espresso powder together before turning on the heat — cocoa clumps badly in hot liquid unless it’s fully dispersed first. Simmer 4-5 minutes over medium heat, whisking often so it doesn’t scorch. Off the heat, whisk in 2 tbsp mascarpone cheese a spoonful at a time until it’s fully melted and smooth into the warm sauce, then stir in a pinch of salt and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract. Let cool completely — it thickens noticeably more as it cools.
Store the finished sauce in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 1 week. It makes roughly 7 drinks’ worth at 2 tbsp per serving.
Assumptions: sugar and cocoa powder at typical grocery pricing; mascarpone cheese at typical grocery pricing (~$5 for an 8oz tub, ~$0.31/tbsp); instant espresso powder at typical grocery pricing (~$6-7 for a 3oz jar, ~$0.27/tsp). Real mascarpone is the priciest single ingredient here, which is why this sauce costs more per serving than our plain Mocha Sauce.
Storage & Shelf Life
- Keeps about 1 week in a sealed jar in the fridge — shorter than our sugar-only syrups, since real mascarpone is dairy.
- Give it a whisk or shake before using — cocoa-and-dairy sauces can separate slightly in the fridge; that’s normal.
- Double the batch if you go through tiramisu lattes quickly, but consider making it more often instead given the shorter shelf life.
Swaps & Notes
- No mascarpone on hand? Full-fat cream cheese, softened, is the closest substitute — slightly tangier than mascarpone, but it gets you most of the way there.
- No instant espresso powder? A tablespoon of very strong brewed coffee or espresso, reduced slightly, works in a pinch, though the flavor will be a touch less concentrated.
What to Make With This
2 tbsp of this sauce, stirred into hot espresso before adding steamed milk, is the Tiramisu Latte. If you want the same drink with less or no sugar, the Sugar-Free Tiramisu Sauce swaps the sweetener with the same method. If you’d rather skip refined sugar and instant espresso powder entirely, the Maple Tiramisu Sauce behind our Ingredient-Honest tier uses real maple syrup and real brewed espresso instead. Combined 1 tbsp each with Irish Cream Syrup, it’s the Irish Cream Tiramisu Latte, a non-alcoholic take on the real Baileys Tiramisu dessert; with Pumpkin Spice Syrup, it’s the Pumpkin Tiramisu Latte, matching the widely-published Pumpkin Tiramisu dessert mashup.

FAQ
Is this the same as your Mocha Sauce with coffee added?
No — real mascarpone cheese whisked into the base is what makes this taste like tiramisu instead of a coffee-flavored mocha. Skipping the mascarpone gets you a different, less accurate drink.
How long does this sauce last?
About 1 week in a sealed jar in the fridge — shorter than most syrups on this site because it contains real mascarpone, a dairy product.
Can I use hot cocoa mix instead of plain cocoa powder?
Not a direct swap — hot cocoa mix already has sugar and milk powder blended in at different ratios, so the cost and calorie numbers above won’t hold. Plain unsweetened cocoa powder is what this recipe assumes.
