Same drink, three ways. Clean-Ingredient is our top recommendation -- Standard and Sugar-Free are the other options.

Ingredients & steps

Standard

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk (about 3/4 of a standard 14oz can)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine sea salt (optional, rounds out the sweetness)

Steps

  1. 1.Warm the condensed milk gently in a small saucepan over low heat, or set the measured amount in a heatproof jar and set that jar in a bowl of hot water -- just until it loosens and pours easily. You're not cooking it, only taking the chill off so it stirs into espresso smoothly.
  2. 2.Off heat, stir in the vanilla extract and salt (if using) until fully combined.
  3. 3.Use right away while warm, or let cool completely before storing.
  4. 4.Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks -- the condensed milk's concentrated sugar preserves it the same way it does in our Irish Cream syrup. Use 2 tbsp per drink, spooned into the bottom of the glass or stirred into hot espresso.

Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Clean-ingredient" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. This is the base behind our Spanish Latte – and it’s worth saying plainly up front that it isn’t really a “syrup” the way vanilla or caramel syrup is. A Spanish Latte doesn’t have a separate flavor syrup poured into a plain milk drink; the sweetened condensed milk itself carries the entire sweetness and flavor. So this Standard-tier version is exactly what it sounds like: a can of sweetened condensed milk, warmed just enough to loosen it, with a touch of vanilla stirred in. That’s the honest, quick-cheat version – no cooking, no reduction, just the can.

Why This Isn’t Diluted Like Our Other Condensed-Milk Syrup

Our Irish Cream Syrup also starts from sweetened condensed milk, but it’s cut with 1/4 cup water so a cocoa powder and flavoring extract can disperse evenly through a thinner base. Spanish Latte doesn’t have that problem – there’s no cocoa or extra flavoring to disperse, so diluting it would only mean watering down the one ingredient doing all the work. This batch stays undiluted on purpose: it’s richer and more concentrated per serving than the Irish Cream syrup, and that’s the more authentic build for this drink, not an oversight.

The Base

Warm the condensed milk gently over low heat, or set the measured amount in a jar inside a bowl of hot water, just until it loosens and pours easily – there’s nothing to cook here, only chill to take off. Off the heat, stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt if using. Use it right away while it’s still warm and easy to pour, or let it cool completely before jarring it up.

Store the finished base in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It makes roughly 8 drinks’ worth at 2 tbsp per serving.

Batch Cost vs. a Flavored Syrup Bottle
This batch (8 servings)$2.50 total
Per 2 tbsp serving~$0.31
Typical store-bought flavored syrup, per serving$0.35-$0.45

Assumptions: sweetened condensed milk at typical grocery pricing ($3 per 14oz can, same sourcing as our Irish Cream syrup), real vanilla extract at Costco-size bulk pricing ($0.30/tbsp). Even though this batch runs richer per serving than a thin sugar syrup, it still lands in the same price range as a store-bought pump bottle – and it’s the actual drink’s flavor base, not an add-on.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Keeps about 2 weeks in a sealed jar in the fridge – the condensed milk’s sugar content preserves it, same shelf life as our Irish Cream syrup.
  • It can thicken slightly in the fridge. A short stir, or a few seconds warmed in a water bath, loosens it back up.
  • A little goes a long way. Because it’s undiluted, 2 tbsp carries more sweetness than 2 tbsp of a thin sugar syrup – don’t be tempted to double the amount per drink without tasting first.

Swaps & Notes

  • Any canned sweetened condensed milk works – there’s no specialty product to hunt down here, unlike our Irish Cream syrup’s flavoring extract.
  • Watching sugar? This is the classic, straight-from-the-can version. See the Sugar-Free Spanish Latte Base (a genuine reduction, not a simple swap – read its honest note) or the Maple Condensed Milk Base behind our Clean-Ingredient tier (real homemade condensed milk, no can required).

What to Make With This

2 tbsp of this base is the flavor foundation of the Spanish Latte – spooned into the bottom of the glass for the iced, layered build, or stirred straight into hot espresso for the hot version. It’s also a fast way to sweeten a plain cold brew if you want a condensed-milk-style Vietnamese-inspired drink without a separate trip to the store.

FAQ

Is this actually a “syrup”?

Not really – that’s the point. A Spanish Latte doesn’t use a separate flavor syrup the way a vanilla or caramel latte does; the sweetened condensed milk itself is the flavor and the sweetener. We call it a “base” in the title for that reason, even though it fills the same recipe-card role as our other syrups.

Do I need to make this every time I want a latte?

No – make one batch and it covers about 8 drinks over 2 weeks. The Spanish Latte recipe assumes you already have a jar on hand.

Why not dilute it with water like the Irish Cream syrup?

There’s no cocoa or flavoring extract that needs to disperse through it, so dilution would only water down the one ingredient carrying all the flavor. Keeping it undiluted is more authentic to how a real Spanish Latte is built, and it’s also why this base runs richer per serving than our other condensed-milk syrup.
