Ingredients & steps
StandardWritten hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 8oz milk
- 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, chocolate or vanilla
- 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
Steps
- 1.Whisk the whey protein into the cold milk in a separate cup or jar until fully smooth -- do this before any heat is involved, since protein dissolves easier cold and blending it into hot milk risks clumping and denaturing.
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
- 3.Stir 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce into the hot espresso until fully combined.
- 4.Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F -- it froths slightly less than plain milk, which is normal -- and pour it over the espresso-sauce mixture.
- 5.Serve immediately.

Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. This is our regular Mocha, with a scoop of whey protein blended into the milk before it’s steamed — the same protein-add-on move Dunkin, Dutch Bros, and Peet’s have all put on their menus in some form over the past couple of years, done at home for a fraction of what any of them charge for it.
Blend the Protein In Before Steaming
The one real technique change from our regular Mocha: whisk the protein powder into cold milk in a separate cup first, until fully smooth, before it ever touches heat. Protein powders (whey especially) dissolve more predictably cold, and steaming a protein-milk mixture that isn’t already smooth is how you end up with a scummy film on top instead of a clean pour. It froths a little less than plain milk once steamed — that’s normal, not a sign of a bad scoop.
Building the Latte
- Whisk 1 scoop of whey protein into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
- Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your cup, or brew strong coffee.
- Stir in 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce while the espresso is still hot.
- Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-sauce mix.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a mocha with a protein-powder add-on charge (these commonly run $1-2 over a standard mocha at chains that offer them), dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, whey protein at ~$0.88/scoop (see the frontmatter comment for the full tub-pricing math). No seasonal ceiling on this one. At 5 protein mochas a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,306/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Swaps & Notes
- Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients — less milk (4oz cold, shaken with the protein, instead of 8oz steamed), same sauce and espresso.
- Casein or plant-based instead of whey? Casein thickens more in this build (it’s fine steamed, less fine shaken cold with acidic coffee) and plant-based proteins can leave a grittier mouthfeel that a milk frother won’t fully smooth out — a blender helps if you go that route. See our Iced Casein Protein Mocha and Plant-Based Protein Mocha for those specific builds.
- Protein total: about 24g from the whey scoop, plus roughly 8g from the 8oz of dairy milk — around 32g total (28g on the iced 4oz-milk version).
- Want a verified-clean protein powder? See our Ingredient-Honest Protein Mocha — same Mocha Sauce idea, rebuilt with real Cocoa-Maple Sauce and Naked Whey (Unflavored) instead of a mystery whey blend.

FAQ
Why blend the protein into cold milk instead of just stirring it into the finished drink?
Two reasons: it dissolves more smoothly cold than it does stirred into a hot, already-assembled drink, and steaming it in gives the whole cup a more uniform, less “chalky at the bottom” texture than stirring a scoop into the top at the end.
Does steaming denature the protein and make it useless?
No — steamed milk tops out around 150-160°F, well below the temperatures (well over 300°F) that would meaningfully break down the protein’s nutritional value. It’s a myth that a hot latte “cooks off” the protein.
Can I make this without an espresso machine?
Yes — a moka pot, AeroPress, or strong drip coffee all work fine in place of the espresso shot.
