Vegan Oat Milk Protein Latte
Uses Vanilla Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardWritten hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 8oz oat milk
- 1 scoop (about 46g) plant-based (pea) protein powder, vanilla flavor
- 2 tbsp Vanilla Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
Steps
- 1.Blend the plant-based protein with the oat milk for 30-45 seconds until as smooth as it's going to get -- a blender does a meaningfully better job than a whisk or shaker bottle with this specific protein type.
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) into your cup and stir in the 2 tbsp of Vanilla Syrup while it's hot.
- 3.Steam or froth the blended protein-oat-milk mixture -- oat milk froths well on its own, and holds up fine with the protein blended in -- and pour it over the espresso-syrup mixture.
- 4.Serve immediately.

Every other protein latte on this site defaults to dairy milk with a plant-based option in the swap list. This one runs the other way: oat milk is the default here, and dairy is the swap-in, for anyone who wants a genuinely fully dairy-free, vegan-friendly protein drink without having to remember to change the milk every time.
Building the Latte
- Blend 1 scoop of plant-based protein with 8oz of oat milk for 30-45 seconds until as smooth as possible.
- Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) into your cup and stir in 2 tbsp of Vanilla Syrup while it’s hot.
- Steam or froth the blended protein-oat-milk mixture — oat milk froths well and holds up fine with protein blended in — and pour it over the espresso-syrup mix.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a plant-based/vegan protein latte (these run at the higher end of chain protein-add-on pricing, since both the oat milk and the protein powder typically carry their own upcharges), oat milk at ~$0.66/8oz cup, pea protein at ~$1.25/scoop, and a homemade Vanilla Syrup batch. At 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,207/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Swaps & Notes
- Still want the plant-based protein but with dairy milk instead? Use the milk-swap options above — whole dairy is actually cheaper than oat here ($0.25/8oz vs. oat’s $0.66), if the vegan angle isn’t the point for you.
- Prefer chocolate to vanilla? Swap in Mocha Sauce for the vanilla syrup — same 2 tbsp portion, same method. See our Plant-Based Protein Mocha for that exact build.
- Protein total: about 21g from the pea protein scoop, plus roughly 2g from the 8oz of oat milk (oat milk carries meaningfully less protein than dairy, generally 1-3g/cup depending on brand) — around 23g total.

FAQ
Why is the protein total lower here than in the dairy-based protein lattes?
Dairy milk itself carries meaningful protein (about 8g per 8oz cup), while oat milk generally carries only 1-3g per cup depending on brand. This recipe’s protein comes almost entirely from the pea protein scoop rather than getting a boost from the milk the way dairy-based versions do.
Is oat milk actually the best plant milk for this?
It’s the best-frothing and most latte-like of the common plant milks, which is why it’s the default here — but soy milk carries more protein per cup (about 7g/8oz, closer to dairy) if maximizing total protein matters more to you than the classic oat-milk latte texture.
Can I make this with whey instead, if I don’t need it to be fully vegan?
Yes — swap in a whey scoop for the same cost/calorie structure as any other whey-based latte on this site, though you’d lose the fully dairy-free/vegan framing that’s the point of this specific recipe.
