Iced Casein Protein Mocha
Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps

Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (regular or decaf -- see the note on caffeine timing)
- 1 scoop (about 33g) casein protein powder, chocolate or vanilla
- 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
- Ice (enough to fill a 16oz glass)
- 4oz cold milk
Steps
- 1.Add the casein protein to a blender with the 4oz of cold milk -- a blender, not a shaker bottle, since casein thickens unevenly when shaken (see our Casein Cold Brew Protein Shake for the full explanation).
- 2.Blend for 20-30 seconds until smooth.
- 3.Pull a double shot of espresso into a heat-safe cup and stir in 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce while hot.
- 4.Fill a 16oz glass with ice, pour the hot espresso-sauce mixture over it, then pour the blended casein-milk mixture on top.
- 5.Stir gently and serve immediately with a straw.

Casein is the protein most often marketed as a “bedtime protein,” since it digests more slowly than whey and releases amino acids over several hours instead of quickly. That’s a genuinely useful property — paired with a caffeinated coffee drink, it’s also a slightly contradictory one, and this recipe says so directly instead of ignoring it.
The Caffeine-Timing Note
If you’re making this as an actual before-bed protein drink (the use case casein is built for), use decaf espresso — regular espresso’s caffeine will work against the point of a slow-digesting, wind-down protein source. If you’re just making this as a daytime protein mocha and don’t care about the bedtime-protein angle, regular espresso is fine; the casein still works as a solid protein source at any time of day, it just won’t carry the “helps you sleep” benefit some people specifically seek it out for.
Building the Iced Version
- Blend 1 scoop of casein protein with 4oz of cold milk for 20-30 seconds until smooth — a blender, not a shaker, same reasoning as our other casein recipe.
- Pull a double shot of espresso (decaf if this is a bedtime drink) into a heat-safe cup and stir in 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce while hot.
- Pour the hot espresso-sauce mixture over a full glass of ice, then top with the blended casein-milk mixture. Stir and serve with a straw.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a mocha with a protein add-on, dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, casein protein from a 4lb Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Casein tub at ~$0.93/scoop. At 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,366/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Swaps & Notes
- Making this before bed? Use decaf espresso — see the caffeine-timing note above.
- Want the smoother, more classic mocha texture instead? Use whey — see our Protein Mocha.
- Protein total: about 24g from the casein scoop, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of cold dairy milk on the iced default — around 28g total (32g on the hot 8oz-milk version).

FAQ
Is it actually a bad idea to combine caffeine and casein?
Not unsafe, just contradictory to casein’s usual purpose — casein’s slow-digesting benefit is most valuable before sleep, and caffeine works against sleep. If you want the actual bedtime-protein benefit, use decaf; if you’re drinking this earlier in the day, regular espresso is fine.
Why blend instead of shake, same as the other casein recipe?
Casein thickens and gels unevenly when shaken, the same issue covered in our Casein Cold Brew Protein Shake — a blender’s continuous shear smooths it out; a shaker bottle tends to leave small gelled clumps.
Can I make this with decaf cold brew instead of decaf espresso?
Yes — swap in 4oz of decaf cold brew concentrate in place of the espresso for a similar iced result with a slightly different flavor profile (cold brew’s smoother, less acidic taste versus espresso’s bolder one).
