Protein Mocha Frappé (with Real Protein Math)

The BYOB Team5 min1 drink (from a batch of Mocha Sauce that makes about 12 servings)$1.51/drink257 cal/drink

Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 2oz espresso, freshly pulled (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/cold brew)
    • 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, chocolate or vanilla
    • 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • 4oz cold milk
    • 1.5 cups ice (about 10-12 standard cubes)

    Steps

    1. 1.Make a batch of Mocha Sauce ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps in the fridge for about 2 weeks.
    2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee/cold brew) -- no need to cool it first.
    3. 3.Add the espresso, whey protein, Mocha Sauce, cold milk, and ice to a blender.
    4. 4.Blend on high for 30-45 seconds, until smooth and slushy with no ice chunks or protein-powder streaks left -- protein powder that hasn't fully broken down will leave a slightly gritty texture, so blend a little longer than you would for a plain frappé if needed.
    5. 5.Pour into a 16oz glass and serve immediately with a straw -- protein frappés separate faster than plain ones.

Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. This is a real chocolate protein frappé, not a placeholder “protein-flavored” drink — it’s our own Mocha Sauce plus a scoop of whey, blended with espresso, milk, and ice into something closer to a protein milkshake with real coffee flavor than a thin protein shake. Same batch-syrup convention as every other flavored frappé on the site: make the sauce once, then this is a 5-minute blend.

Make the Sauce First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Mocha Sauce in the fridge — cocoa and sugar simmered into a pourable sauce, keeping about 2 weeks. If you haven’t made a batch yet, go do that first, then come back here.

    Building the Frappé

    1. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz), or brew strong coffee/cold brew instead.
    2. Add the espresso, 1 scoop of whey protein, 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce, 4oz cold milk, and 1.5 cups of ice to a blender.
    3. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth — no ice chunks or powder streaks left.
    4. Pour into a 16oz glass and serve immediately with a straw.
Café Protein Frappé vs. Home Protein Mocha Frappé
    Café-style protein Frappuccino/blended drink (grande)~$7.75
Home protein mocha frappé (espresso, whey, sauce, milk, ice)~$1.51
    Savings per drink$6.24

The sauce batch itself is a one-time ~$1.30 and makes about 12 drinks — see the full Mocha Sauce recipe for the batch method and cost breakdown. Assumptions: grande-size blended drink, national-average café pricing for a specialty protein-add blended drink, dairy milk, whey protein at ~$0.88/scoop (a typical $30/2lb tub, ~32 scoops, see Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha for the full jar-pricing derivation), $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans. At 5 protein mocha frappés a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,498/year back in your pocket versus the café version.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Protein total: about 24g from the whey scoop plus roughly 2g from the 4oz of dairy milk — around 26g total, a genuine meal-adjacent number for a blended drink.
    • Nut allergy? This recipe has no peanut butter in it — if you want the peanut-butter version of this idea instead, see our Peanut Butter Cup Frappé, which does carry a peanut allergen note.
    • Watching sugar? We haven’t built Sugar-Free or Ingredient-Honest tiers of the Frappé format yet — for a lower-sugar version today, use a sugar-free chocolate whey and cut the Mocha Sauce to 1 tbsp.
    • Prefer it as a hot protein mocha instead of blended? See our Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha or the base Protein Mocha Latte for the poured, steamed-milk version.

    FAQ

Why does this leave a gritty texture sometimes?

Almost always under-blending — protein powder needs a genuinely thorough blend to break down completely, more than a plain sugar syrup does. Blend a full 45 seconds and check for streaks before pouring if this happens to you.

Can I use plant-based protein instead of whey?

Yes, though plant-based proteins can be grittier and blend less smoothly cold — a longer blend time and a slightly higher-powered blender help close that gap.

Is this the same as your Proffee recipe?

No — Proffee is cold brew concentrate, protein powder, and milk, shaken or blended without ice into a drinkable-not-slushy texture, and it has no espresso or chocolate flavor. This is an espresso-based, ice-blended frappé with real Mocha Sauce — a different format and a different flavor.
