    Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha

The BYOB Team5 min1 drink (from a batch of Mocha Sauce that makes about 12 servings)$1.94/drink355 cal/drink

Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

    Ingredients

    • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
    • 8oz milk
    • 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, chocolate or vanilla
    • 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • 1 tbsp powdered peanut butter (e.g. PB2), whisked into the milk with the protein

    Steps

    1. 1.Whisk the whey protein and powdered peanut butter into the cold milk together in a separate cup until fully smooth -- do this before any heat is involved.
    2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
    3. 3.Stir 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce into the hot espresso until fully combined.
    4. 4.Steam or froth the protein-peanut-butter-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-sauce mixture.
    5. 5.Serve immediately.

This is our regular Mocha, stacked with a whey scoop and a tablespoon of powdered peanut butter instead of just one protein source — chocolate and peanut butter is a flavor pairing that also happens to be a genuinely higher-protein one, since powdered peanut butter (unlike a spoonful of the regular jarred kind) carries real protein at a fraction of the fat and calories.

Why Powdered, Not Regular, Peanut Butter

Regular peanut butter is mostly fat by calorie — a tablespoon runs about 95-100 calories, most of it fat, with only about 4g of protein. Powdered peanut butter (the defatted, PB2-style kind) strips most of that fat out in processing, leaving a tablespoon at around 23 calories with roughly 3g of protein — a meaningfully better calorie-to-protein ratio for a drink that’s already stacking a full whey scoop and a cocoa-and-sugar sauce. It also dissolves into hot or cold milk far more easily than a spoonful of the sticky regular jar version would.

    Building the Latte

    1. Whisk 1 scoop of whey protein and 1 tbsp powdered peanut butter into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
    2. Pull a double shot of espresso into your cup and stir in 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce while it’s hot.
    3. Steam or froth the protein-peanut-butter-milk mixture and pour it over the espresso-sauce mix.
Café Peanut Butter Protein Mocha vs. Home Version
Café-style chocolate peanut butter protein mocha~$7.50
Home chocolate peanut butter protein mocha~$1.94
    Savings per drink$5.56

Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a specialty flavor-combo protein mocha, dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, whey protein at ~$0.88/scoop, powdered peanut butter at ~$0.13/tbsp (see the frontmatter comment for the full jar-pricing math). At 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,334/year back in your pocket versus the café version.

    Swaps & Notes

    • No powdered peanut butter on hand? Regular peanut butter works, but whisk it into the hot espresso first (it dissolves better warm) rather than the cold milk — expect roughly 75 more calories and a slightly thicker, less smooth texture than the powdered version.
    • Nut allergy? Skip the peanut butter powder entirely and this becomes our regular Protein Mocha — the mocha sauce and whey scoop carry the drink fine on their own.
    • Protein total: about 24g from the whey scoop, 8g from the 8oz of dairy milk, and 3g from the peanut butter powder — around 35g total, the highest of any latte-format recipe on this page.

    FAQ

Why does this recipe have more protein than the other flavored lattes?

It’s stacking three protein sources instead of one: the whey scoop (24g), the milk itself (8g from dairy), and the powdered peanut butter (3g) — most other recipes on this page only combine two of those.

Can I use a chocolate peanut butter flavored whey instead of plain whey plus the mocha sauce?

Yes, though you’ll likely want to cut the mocha sauce to 1 tbsp or skip it if the whey itself is already chocolate-and-peanut-butter flavored, to avoid an overly sweet, muddled result.

Does the peanut butter powder taste artificial compared to real peanut butter?

It’s milder and less rich than real peanut butter — that’s the tradeoff for the lower fat/calorie count. If you want the fuller peanut butter flavor and don’t mind the extra calories, use 1/2 tbsp of regular peanut butter instead, dissolved into the hot espresso.
