Same drink, three ways. Clean-Ingredient is our top recommendation -- Standard and Sugar-Free are the other options.

Uses Orange Cardamom Syrup (Standard) — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

Ingredients & steps

Standard

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

Ingredients

  • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
  • 8oz milk, steamed or frothed
  • 2 tbsp Orange Cardamom Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
  • Optional: whipped cream and a light dusting of orange zest or ground cardamom for topping

Steps

  1. 1.Make a batch of Orange Cardamom Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps in the fridge for about 2 weeks, so this is a once-every-couple-weeks step, not a per-drink one.
  2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee) directly into your serving cup.
  3. 3.Stir 2 tbsp of the orange cardamom syrup into the hot espresso until fully combined.
  4. 4.Steam or froth 8oz of milk to about 150°F and pour over the espresso-syrup mixture.
  5. 5.Top with whipped cream and a light dusting of orange zest or ground cardamom if using -- optional, and purely cosmetic. Serve immediately.

Orange cardamom isn’t a flavor you’ll find on a big-chain seasonal menu the way pumpkin spice or peppermint mocha are – it’s more of a specialty and third-wave café thing, the kind of drink an independent shop puts on a chalkboard menu rather than a national rotation. It shares the “spice-forward” territory with our Chai family, but the two aren’t the same drink: chai is a full spice blend built on black tea, while this one leads with real orange zest and lets cardamom play a supporting role. Once the syrup’s made, building the latte takes about 2 minutes.

Make the Syrup First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Orange Cardamom Syrup in the fridge – a 20-minute batch (most of it hands-off simmering and steeping) that makes about 12 drinks’ worth and keeps for 2 weeks, so you only need to make it every couple of weeks, not every morning. If you haven’t made a batch yet, go do that first, then come back here.

Building the Latte

  1. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your cup, or brew a strong coffee/moka pot equivalent.
  2. Stir in 2 tbsp of the orange cardamom syrup while the espresso is still hot – it dissolves faster and blends better than adding it after the milk.
  3. Steam or froth 8oz of milk to about 150°F (see How to Make a Latte at Home for the full milk-steaming technique if you’re new to it) and pour it over the espresso-syrup mix.
  4. Top with whipped cream and a light dusting of orange zest or ground cardamom if you want the specialty-café presentation – it’s optional, and the drink tastes the same without it.
Specialty-Café Orange Cardamom Latte vs. Home Version
Specialty-café grande orange cardamom latte$6.25
Home orange cardamom latte (espresso, milk, syrup)~$0.98
Savings per drink$5.27

The syrup batch itself is a one-time ~$1.90 and makes about 12 drinks – see the full syrup recipe for the batch method and cost breakdown. Split across servings, it’s already paid for itself by drink #2 or #3.

Assumptions: grande-size drink, dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans. The café-side comparison uses pricing closer to an independent specialty coffee shop than a big chain, since that’s realistically where you’d find this flavor on a menu – if your local shop charges more (or less), the gap moves with it, but it stays large either way. At 5 orange cardamom lattes a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,265/year back in your pocket versus the café version.

Swaps & Notes

  • No espresso machine? A moka pot or strong AeroPress shot works fine.
  • Want the whipped cream and garnish? It’s the specialty-café presentation for this drink, but purely cosmetic – the syrup carries the full flavor either way.
  • Watching sugar? This is the classic-flavor version. If you want the same drink with less or no sugar, see the Sugar-Free Orange Cardamom Latte (same method, swapped sweetener) or the Clean-Ingredient Orange Cardamom Latte (real maple and a longer zest-and-pod infusion, no refined sugar).
  • Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients to switch – it’s not just “add ice.” You’ll want less milk (about 4oz cold over ice instead of 8oz steamed, since the ice takes up room in the glass), and the syrup still goes into the hot espresso first so it dissolves, before that mixture gets poured over ice and topped with cold milk.

FAQ

Do I need to make the syrup every time I want this drink?

No – that’s the whole reason the syrup lives in its own recipe now. One batch keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge and covers roughly 12 drinks, so this page is just the 5-minute assembly step.

Can I make this without an espresso machine?

Yes – a moka pot, AeroPress, or even strong drip coffee works. See How to Make a Latte at Home for the no-machine method.

Is orange cardamom the same as chai?

No – chai is a full spice blend (cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, clove, black pepper) built on black tea, with cardamom as one ingredient among several. This drink leads with real orange zest and uses cardamom as a supporting note, not the other way around. If you want the fuller spice-blend drink, see our Chai Latte recipes.

Why isn’t this drink on a chain menu the way pumpkin spice is?

It’s more common on specialty and third-wave café menus than at big chains – a distinctive, less mass-market flavor rather than a national seasonal item. That’s also part of why we priced the café comparison above like an independent coffee shop rather than a chain.
