Same drink, three ways. Clean-Ingredient is our top recommendation -- Standard and Sugar-Free are the other options.

Uses Sugar-Free Orange Cardamom Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

Ingredients & steps

Sugar-Free

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

Ingredients

  • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
  • 8oz milk or unsweetened milk alternative, steamed or frothed
  • 2 tbsp Sugar-Free Orange Cardamom Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
  • Optional: sugar-free whipped cream and a light dusting of orange zest or ground cardamom for topping

Steps

  1. 1.Make a batch of Sugar-Free Orange Cardamom Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps in the fridge for about 2 weeks, so this is a once-every-couple-weeks step, not a per-drink one.
  2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee) directly into your serving cup.
  3. 3.Stir in 2 tbsp of the sugar-free syrup while the espresso is hot.
  4. 4.Steam or froth 8oz of milk (dairy or unsweetened alternative) to about 150°F and pour over the espresso-syrup mixture.
  5. 5.Top with sugar-free whipped cream and a dusting of orange zest or ground cardamom if using. Serve immediately.

Orange cardamom is already a lighter-sugar flavor than most chain seasonal syrups, but a specialty-café grande still runs real added sugar you may not need. This version keeps the same real citrus-and-cardamom flavor with close to none of it – once the syrup batch is done, assembling the drink takes about 2 minutes.

Make the Syrup First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Sugar-Free Orange Cardamom Syrup in the fridge – a 20-minute batch that makes about 12 drinks’ worth and keeps for 2 weeks, so you only need to make it every couple of weeks, not every morning. If you haven’t made a batch yet, go do that first, then come back here.

Building the Latte

  1. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) into your cup, or brew a strong coffee/moka pot equivalent.
  2. Stir in 2 tbsp of the sugar-free syrup while the espresso is hot.
  3. Steam or froth 8oz of milk (dairy, or an unsweetened alternative if you’re also watching carbs from milk) and pour over the espresso-syrup mixture.
  4. Top with sugar-free whipped cream and a dusting of orange zest or ground cardamom if you want the full presentation.
Home Sugar-Free vs. Specialty-Café Orange Cardamom Latte
Home sugar-free orange cardamom latte~$1.19
Specialty-café grande orange cardamom latte (regular, not sugar-free)$6.25
Savings per drink$5.06

The syrup batch is a one-time ~$4.45 and makes about 12 drinks – see the full syrup recipe for the batch method and cost breakdown, which comes out to roughly $0.37 per drink in syrup alone.

Assumptions: grande-size drink, café pricing closer to an independent specialty shop than a big chain (see the Standard latte for why), monk fruit/allulose sweetener at typical grocery pricing (~$3/cup at bulk-bag pricing). Your numbers shift a little with which sweetener brand you use – the gap doesn’t change.

FAQ

Do I need to make the syrup every time I want this drink?

No – that’s why it’s its own recipe now. One batch keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge and covers roughly 12 drinks, so this page is just the 5-minute assembly step.

Can I buy a sugar-free orange or citrus syrup instead of making it?

Bottled sugar-free citrus syrups exist, but the orange-and-cardamom combination specifically is hard to find pre-made outside of a specialty café, and the per-pump price adds up fast. This version costs a fraction of that and you control exactly what’s in it.

How much sugar does this actually save me?

A specialty-café orange cardamom latte carries meaningful added sugar in a grande size, comparable to our other flavored lattes. This version has close to zero, depending on which sweetener you use – that’s the primary reason to make it, on top of the cost savings.
