Ingredient-Honest Proffee (Protein Cold Brew)
Ingredients & steps
Ingredient-HonestIngredients
- 1 cup (8oz) Cold Brew Concentrate (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) Naked Whey (Unflavored) protein powder -- see why below
- 4oz milk or milk alternative of choice
- Ice, as needed
Steps
- 1.Add the Naked Whey to a shaker bottle or blender with the milk first -- mixing powder into liquid before the coffee goes in is the single biggest trick to avoiding clumps.
- 2.Shake or blend for 15-20 seconds until fully smooth, no powder streaks left.
- 3.Fill a glass with ice, pour in the cold brew concentrate, then pour the protein-milk mixture over it.
- 4.Stir once to combine, or leave it layered for a few seconds if you want the visual before mixing.

Milk options — the Ingredient-Honest read
We hold every milk option to the same bar as the rest of this recipe — here's exactly where each one stands, not just the ones that pass.
- PassKirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk — organic and rBST-free -- already clears Criterion 16 outright, no change needed
- ConditionalWhole dairy milk (regular, non-organic) — needs to be organic and rBST-free to fully qualify -- this recipe's own default, Kirkland Organic A2, already is
- Conditional2% reduced-fat dairy milk — same as regular whole dairy -- needs to be organic and rBST-free to fully qualify
- PassOat milk (Elmhurst 1925 Unsweetened Milked Oats) — filtered water, whole grain oats, and salt, nothing else
- PassAlmond milk (Elmhurst 1925 Unsweetened Milked Almonds) — filtered water and almonds only
- PassAlmond milk (Califia Farms Organic Unsweetened Almondmilk) — water, organic almonds, and sea salt only
- PassAlmond milk (Malk Unsweetened Almond Milk) — filtered water, almonds, and Himalayan pink salt only
- PassSoy milk, unsweetened (Unsweetened Edensoy Organic) — purified water and organic soybeans only
- FailsRice milk, unsweetened (e.g. Rice Dream Unsweetened Original) — added oil and/or a gum -- every commercial rice milk we checked uses at least one; no clean commercial option currently exists

This is the Ingredient-Honest build of our Proffee (Protein Cold Brew) — same cold-brew-plus-protein idea, one real swap: Naked Whey (Unflavored) in place of “a scoop of protein powder, vanilla or chocolate.” That phrase covers a lot of ground, and most of what it covers doesn’t clear our 16-point Ingredient-Honest standard — see the Ingredient-Honest Registry’s new “Protein powders” section for the full accounting of what we checked and why.
What “Ingredient-Honest” Means Here
Naked Whey (Unflavored) is one ingredient: grass-fed whey protein concentrate, full stop — no lecithin, no gums, no flavoring. That’s a clean Pass with nothing else to reconcile, which makes this the simplest of our five new protein-tier recipes: Proffee has no syrup or sauce to also re-source, so swapping the protein powder is the entire upgrade.
Why not just grab a flavored protein powder instead? Because none of the ones we’ve checked so far clear the bar. Vital Proteins’ flavored Vanilla SKU adds maltodextrin and stevia; Levels’ Pure Chocolate and Vanilla Cinnamon both lean on a stevia/monk-fruit sweetening system that isn’t one of the five sweeteners (maple, honey, raw cane sugar, coconut sugar, dates) our own Sweeteners Compared page grades as Pass; KOS fails even unflavored, on an added acacia gum. Naked Whey, Naked Casein, and plain Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides are the only three Pass picks as of this registry’s first protein-powder audit — Naked Whey is the one we default to here because it mixes smoothest cold, which is exactly the format this drink uses.
Swapping the Milk? Here’s the Honest Read on Each Option
Milk swap-ins here get graded against the same bar as everything else on this site, and that verdict doesn’t change by flavor — a clean almond milk is clean whether it’s going into this proffee (protein cold brew) or any other recipe. Rather than reprint the full rundown on every page, we keep the actual brand-by-brand findings in one place: see the Ingredient-Honest Registry for exactly which oat, soy, almond, rice, and dairy picks Pass, Fail, or carry a condition — including the specific reason each failing brand doesn’t make the cut. Short version for this recipe: stick with Kirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk above, or swap in one of the registry’s Pass picks instead.
Building the Drink
- Add 1 serving (2 scoops, about 30g) of Naked Whey (Unflavored) to a shaker bottle or blender along with 4oz of milk first — powder into liquid, not the other way around, is what actually prevents clumping.
- Shake or blend for 15-20 seconds until completely smooth.
- Fill a glass with ice, pour in 1 cup (8oz) of Cold Brew Concentrate, then pour the protein-milk mixture over it.
- Stir to combine, or let it sit layered for a moment if you want the visual first.
Assumptions: Naked Whey (Unflavored) at ~$1.80/serving (2 scoops, 30g) per Protein Powder Brands Compared and the registry’s own pricing note, homemade Cold Brew Concentrate at $0.86/8oz (this site’s own standing per-cup figure), and Kirkland Signature Organic A2 Whole Milk.
Why This Costs More Than the Standard Version (and Why That’s Fine)
Being straight about the math: this version costs about $1.56 more per drink than our Standard Proffee, because Naked Whey (~$1.80/serving) runs meaningfully pricier than a typical bulk-tub protein blend (~$0.94/scoop), and we’re pricing the cold brew concentrate at this site’s own more rigorously sourced $0.86/cup rather than a looser grocery-bean estimate. It’s still a real saving against the alternatives most people are actually comparing proffee to: $2.03 per drink against bottled ready-to-drink protein coffee, and $3.79-$4.29 per drink against a café protein add-on. At 5 proffees a week over this site’s standard 48-week year (240 drinks), that’s roughly $487/year saved versus bottled, or roughly $970/year versus a café protein add-on. The honest tradeoff: pick this version because you want a single-ingredient, verified-clean protein powder, not because it’s the cheapest way to make proffee — the Standard version still is.

FAQ
Why Naked Whey specifically, and not just “unflavored whey protein”?
Because “unflavored” alone doesn’t guarantee a clean label — some unflavored SKUs still carry added lecithin, gums, or stabilizers. Naked Whey’s unflavored tub is a verified single ingredient (grass-fed whey protein concentrate, nothing else), confirmed against our own Ingredient-Honest Registry. Unflavored Levels Grass-Fed Whey is an equally clean, similarly priced alternative if you already have it.
Won’t an unflavored protein powder taste bland compared to vanilla or chocolate?
A little flatter than a flavored scoop, yes — the Standard recipe notes that vanilla or chocolate protein blends “naturally cover the coffee’s bitterness.” If you want real flavor here without a flavored powder, add a splash of real vanilla extract (Pass per the registry) rather than reaching for a flavored protein tub.
Can I use Naked Casein instead of Naked Whey?
Yes — it’s also a Pass, and also single-ingredient. It mixes thicker and more shake-like than whey, which some people prefer in a protein-forward drink like this one. See Protein Powder Brands Compared for the full side-by-side.
