Uses Pumpkin Spice Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

    Ingredients

    • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
    • 8oz milk
    • 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, vanilla or unflavored
    • 2 tbsp Pumpkin Spice Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)

    Steps

    1. 1.Whisk the whey protein into the cold milk in a separate cup until fully smooth, before any heat is involved.
    2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
    3. 3.Stir 2 tbsp of Pumpkin Spice Syrup into the hot espresso until fully combined.
    4. 4.Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-syrup mixture.
    5. 5.Top with a pinch of pumpkin pie spice if you want the full café look. Serve immediately.

Pumpkin spice and protein add-ons are two of the biggest menu trends of the last few years, and chains have already started combining them — this is that same combination, built on our real Pumpkin Spice Syrup instead of a mystery-blend base, with a scoop of whey whisked into the milk.

    Building the Latte

    1. Make a batch of Pumpkin Spice Syrup ahead of time if you don’t have one — it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
    2. Whisk 1 scoop of whey protein into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
    3. Pull a double shot of espresso into your cup and stir in 2 tbsp of the syrup while it’s hot.
    4. Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-syrup mix. Top with a pinch of pumpkin pie spice if you want the full look.
Café Protein PSL vs. Home Version
Café pumpkin spice latte with a protein add-on~$7.25
    Home high-protein pumpkin spice latte~$1.78
    Savings per drink$5.47

Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average Starbucks-style seasonal pricing plus a protein-powder add-on charge, dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, whey protein at ~$0.88/scoop. Like our regular Copycat Pumpkin Spice Latte, this one really does have a seasonal ceiling on the café side of the comparison — roughly 9-10 more weeks left in a typical fall season. At 3 protein PSLs a week through the rest of the season, that’s about 27-30 drinks and roughly $148-$164 saved for the season alone.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients for less milk (4oz cold, shaken with the protein, instead of 8oz steamed).
    • Want it dairy-free? Oat milk holds up especially well with pumpkin spice’s warm baking-spice flavor — use the milk-swap options above.
    • Protein total: about 24g from the whey scoop, plus roughly 8g from the 8oz of dairy milk — around 32g total (28g on the iced 4oz-milk version).
    • Want a verified-clean protein powder? See our Ingredient-Honest High-Protein Pumpkin Spice Latte — same Pumpkin-Maple Base idea, rebuilt with Naked Whey (Unflavored) instead of a mystery whey blend.

    FAQ

Is a “protein PSL” a real menu item, or is this a made-up combination?

It’s real — protein-powder add-ons and the fall pumpkin spice season now overlap enough that several chains have run some version of a protein-boosted PSL, alongside their standalone protein-coffee lines. This recipe is that same combination, built at home.

Does the protein powder clash with the pumpkin spice flavor?

Not with a vanilla or unflavored whey — the syrup’s real pumpkin and warm spice notes come through clearly either way. A chocolate-flavored protein is the one combination we’d skip here; it muddies the pumpkin flavor more than it complements it.

How long does the season last for this one?

Same seasonal window as our regular Copycat Pumpkin Spice Latte — roughly a 9-10 week fall run at most chains, though nothing stops you from making the syrup and this drink year-round at home if you want to.
