Casein Protein Cold Brew (Thick-Shake Style)
Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 1 cup (8oz) Cold Brew Concentrate (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 scoop (about 33g) casein protein powder, vanilla or chocolate
- 4oz milk or milk alternative of choice
- 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp maple syrup, or sweetener of choice, to taste
- Ice, as needed
Steps
- 1.Add the casein protein, cocoa powder, and maple syrup to a blender with the milk -- a blender, not a shaker bottle, is the right tool here (see the note on why below).
- 2.Blend for 20-30 seconds until fully smooth and slightly thickened.
- 3.Fill a glass with ice, pour in the cold brew concentrate, then pour the blended protein mixture over it.
- 4.Stir once to combine, or drink it more milkshake-style with a spoon-straw -- casein thickens enough that it sits between a drink and a light shake.

Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. Casein and whey are both dairy-derived proteins, but they don’t behave the same way in a cold drink, and this recipe is built around that difference rather than pretending they’re interchangeable. Whey dissolves clean. Casein thickens and gels, especially in contact with the mild acidity of cold brew — it’s the same protein that makes a “casein pudding” recipe work, and here it turns a plain protein cold brew into something closer to a thin milkshake.
Why a Blender, Not a Shaker
Shake casein in a bottle the way you would whey, and you’ll likely get uneven clumps instead of a smooth mix — casein’s thickening happens too fast and unevenly for a shaker’s agitation to fully break up. A blender’s continuous shear does the job properly. If you don’t own one, a milk frother or immersion blender run for a full 30 seconds is the next-best option; a shaker bottle is genuinely the wrong tool for this specific protein.
Building the Drink
- Add 1 scoop of casein protein, 1 tsp cocoa powder, and 1/2 tsp maple syrup to a blender along with 4oz of milk.
- Blend for 20-30 seconds until fully smooth and noticeably thicker than a plain milk pour.
- Fill a glass with ice, pour in 1 cup of cold brew concentrate, then pour the blended mixture over it.
- Stir to combine, or enjoy it milkshake-style with a wide straw.
Assumptions: homemade cold brew concentrate at this site’s standard $16/lb bean pricing, casein protein from a 4lb Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Casein tub at ~$0.93/scoop (see the frontmatter comment for the full tub-pricing math), dairy milk, cocoa and maple syrup at typical grocery pricing. At 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,154/year back in your pocket versus a café thick-protein-cold-foam-style drink.
Swaps & Notes
- Want the smoother, more classic proffee texture instead? Use whey, not casein — see our Vanilla Whey Protein Cold Brew. Casein and whey aren’t a straight swap for each other; the whole point of this recipe is the different, thicker texture casein produces.
- Casein is sometimes marketed as a “bedtime protein” because it digests more slowly than whey. That pairs oddly with coffee’s caffeine if you’re actually drinking this before bed — if that’s your use case, make it with decaf cold brew instead.
- Protein total: about 24g from the casein scoop, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of dairy milk — around 28g total.

FAQ
Why does this recipe use a blender instead of the shaker bottle most protein-coffee recipes call for?
Casein thickens and gels much faster than whey when it hits liquid, and a shaker’s agitation doesn’t break that up evenly the way a blender’s continuous blades do. Shaking casein tends to leave small gelled clumps; blending doesn’t.
Is casein actually worse for coffee than whey?
Not worse, just different — casein digests more slowly (useful for satiety or an overnight protein source) and produces a thicker, creamier texture that some people specifically want in a protein coffee. It’s a texture and use-case tradeoff, not a downgrade.
Can I make this less thick if I don’t like the shake-like texture?
Yes — add an extra 2-4oz of milk or cold brew when blending. It thins the texture out closer to a standard protein cold brew without changing the protein content.
