    Hot Chocolate

The BYOB Team5 min1 drink (from a batch of Mocha Sauce that makes about 12 servings)$0.77/drink236 cal/drink

Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 8oz milk, steamed or heated (no espresso machine needed -- a saucepan or microwave works fine)
    • 3 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • Optional: whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or a dusting of cocoa powder for topping

    Steps

    1. 1.Make a batch of Mocha Sauce ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps in the fridge for about 2 weeks.
    2. 2.Heat 8oz of milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat (or in the microwave in 30-second bursts), stirring occasionally, until steaming but not boiling -- about 150°F if you're using a thermometer.
    3. 3.Whisk in 3 tbsp of the mocha sauce until fully combined and no streaks remain.
    4. 4.Top with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or a dusting of cocoa powder if using. Serve immediately.

This is the one recipe on this whole site with no coffee in it at all — just steamed milk and our homemade Mocha Sauce, for anyone at the table who doesn’t drink espresso. No espresso machine needed; a saucepan or a microwave gets the milk hot enough.

Why This Uses More Chocolate Than Our Mocha

Our Mocha recipe uses 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce against 2oz of espresso plus 8oz of milk — the espresso’s bitterness and bulk balance against the chocolate so 2 tbsp reads as a full, rich mocha. Pull the espresso out entirely and 2 tbsp over straight milk tastes thin, more like chocolate milk than real hot chocolate. This recipe uses 3 tbsp instead, which reads as a proper, rich hot chocolate once there’s no espresso to balance against.

    Building the Drink

    1. Make a batch of Mocha Sauce ahead of time if you haven’t already — it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge and this recipe uses 3 tbsp per mug, so one batch covers about 8 mugs.
    2. Heat 8oz of milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat (or in the microwave, in 30-second bursts, stirring between each), until steaming but not boiling.
    3. Whisk in 3 tbsp of the mocha sauce until fully combined.
    4. Top with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or a dusting of cocoa powder if you want the full café look.

Assumptions: grande-size drink, chain hot-chocolate pricing, dairy milk. Unlike every other recipe on this site, there’s no espresso cost in this one at all — just milk and sauce — so this is the cheapest milk-based drink on the site. At 5 hot chocolates a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $955/year back in your pocket, which matters most for households making this for kids or non-coffee-drinking family members on a regular basis, not just a once-a-winter treat.

    Swaps & Notes

    • No stovetop or microwave handy? Any way of heating milk to steaming (not boiling) works — a milk frother with a heating function, a kettle-and-double-boiler setup, whatever you’ve got.
    • Want it richer? Go up to 4 tbsp of mocha sauce if 3 still tastes too light for you — there’s no espresso bitterness to balance against here, so more sauce just means more chocolate flavor, not an unbalanced drink.
    • Want a lower-sugar version? Swap in Sugar-Free Mocha Sauce 1:1 — same 3 tbsp ratio, same method.
    • Serving kids? This is the one recipe on the site built with that audience in mind from the start — no caffeine at all, since there’s no espresso or coffee anywhere in it.

    FAQ

Why does this use more mocha sauce than your Mocha recipe?

Because there’s no espresso in this drink to balance against. Our Mocha uses 2 tbsp of sauce against 2oz of bitter espresso; pulled over straight milk with nothing to balance it, 2 tbsp tastes thin. 3 tbsp reads as a properly rich hot chocolate instead.

Does this have any caffeine in it?

No — there’s no coffee or espresso anywhere in this recipe. The Mocha Sauce is cocoa powder, sugar, and vanilla; cocoa itself contains a very small amount of natural caffeine (far less than coffee), but there’s no added coffee or espresso in this drink.

Can I make this without steaming the milk, just heated?

Yes — a gentle simmer in a saucepan or a microwave in short bursts both work fine. You’re just aiming for steaming-hot, not frothed; a thin layer of foam from stirring or a quick handheld whisk is a nice touch but not required.

Is this the same as hot cocoa?

Yes — “hot cocoa” and “hot chocolate” are used interchangeably for this same drink; this recipe works for either name.
