Double Protein Mocha (Whey + Collagen)
Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardWritten hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 8oz milk
- 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, chocolate or vanilla
- 1 scoop (about 20g) unflavored collagen peptides
- 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
Steps
- 1.Whisk the whey protein and collagen peptides into the cold milk together in a separate cup until fully smooth -- collagen dissolves instantly, whey needs a bit more whisking.
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
- 3.Stir 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce into the hot espresso until fully combined.
- 4.Steam or froth the double-protein-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-sauce mixture.
- 5.Serve immediately.

This is the highest-protein drink in our entire protein-coffee lineup, and it earns that by stacking two different protein sources instead of relying on a bigger single scoop. It’s also the one recipe on this page we want to be the most upfront about: combining protein powders isn’t a magic multiplier, it’s mostly extra dishwashing, and 50g of protein in one drink is more than most people actually need in a single sitting.
Why Whey and Collagen, Specifically
Whey carries the complete amino acid profile that supports muscle protein synthesis — the thing you actually want after a workout. Collagen doesn’t (it’s low in tryptophan), but it’s cheap relative to its calorie count and carries its own separately-marketed skin and joint benefits. Combining them means you get whey’s functional protein completeness plus collagen’s low-calorie bulk and its own selling point, in one cup, instead of choosing one or the other. It is not “twice the muscle-building benefit” — it’s one complete protein source plus one incomplete one.
Building the Latte
- Whisk 1 scoop of whey protein and 1 scoop of collagen peptides into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
- Pull a double shot of espresso into your cup and stir in 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce while it’s hot.
- Steam or froth the double-protein-milk mixture and pour it over the espresso-sauce mix.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a mocha with two separate protein-powder add-on charges (a realistic upcharge if you asked a café to stack two protein scoops), dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, whey at ~$0.88/scoop, collagen at ~$1.02/scoop. At 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,301/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Swaps & Notes
- 50g of protein is a lot for one drink. If that’s more than you need, use half a scoop of each powder instead of a full scoop of both — roughly halves the added cost and calories while keeping the “two sources” idea.
- Just want the complete-protein source without the extra cost? Skip the collagen and use our Protein Mocha instead — 24g of protein at a third less cost.
- Protein total: about 24g from the whey scoop, 18g from the collagen scoop, and 8g from the 8oz of dairy milk — around 50g total (46g on the iced 4oz-milk version), the highest on this page.

FAQ
Is combining two protein powders actually better than just using more of one?
Not straightforwardly — more whey alone would give you more complete protein for less money per gram than adding collagen does. The reason to combine rather than just double up on whey is collagen’s lower calorie-and-cost-per-scoop plus its separate skin/joint marketing angle, not a nutritional synergy between the two powders.
Do I really need 50g of protein in one coffee drink?
Probably not, for most people’s daily targets — this recipe exists as an option for people specifically trying to hit a high single-meal protein target (a common strategy in some training programs), not as a recommendation that everyone should be drinking 50g-protein coffees. Halve both scoops if that’s excessive for your goals.
Can I substitute a different second protein instead of collagen?
Plant-based protein works too, though it reintroduces the grittier texture our Plant-Based Protein Mocha discusses — collagen is the smoother-mixing choice for a second protein source specifically because it dissolves clear.
