Dirty Coconut Mountain Dew
Uses Toasted Coconut Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 12oz Mountain Dew, cold
- 1 tbsp Toasted Coconut Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
- 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half
- Ice (enough to fill a 16oz glass)
Steps
- 1.Make a batch of Toasted Coconut Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
- 2.Fill a 16oz glass with ice.
- 3.Pour 1 tbsp of the syrup directly over the ice.
- 4.Pour 12oz cold Mountain Dew over the syrup and stir gently to dissolve it -- syrup mixes into cold soda more slowly than into hot espresso, so give it a real stir, not just a swirl.
- 5.Top with 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half -- pour it slowly over the back of a spoon so it sits in a visible layer instead of a starter cup, or stir it in fully if you prefer it blended. Serve immediately with a straw.

Mountain Dew’s citrus edge and toasted coconut land in the same flavor lane as Sonic’s “Ocean Water” and the coconut-lime fountain drinks it spawned — a real toasted coconut syrup gets you there without a lime-flavored concentrate or blue food coloring. Where Dirty Coconut Coke uses Coke’s caramel base to round the coconut out, Mountain Dew’s brightness does the opposite: it keeps the coconut tasting fresh and citrus-forward instead of dessert-like. Same syrup, a genuinely different drink depending on which soda it lands in.
Make the Syrup First
This recipe assumes a jar of Toasted Coconut Syrup already in the fridge — the same syrup behind our Toasted Coconut Latte, good for about 2 weeks. Make a batch first if you haven’t; from there, this drink is a 3-minute pour with nothing cooked or heated.
Building the Drink
- Fill a 16oz glass with ice and pour 1 tbsp Toasted Coconut Syrup over it.
- Pour 12oz cold Mountain Dew slowly, tilting the glass and pouring down the side rather than straight down the middle — Mountain Dew runs noticeably fizzier than Coke or Dr Pepper, and a syrup-and-ice base gives carbonation extra surface area to foam up on. A fast center pour here will foam over the rim before you’ve gotten a stir in.
- Once the fizz settles, stir until the syrup’s dissolved, then top with a 1oz (2 tbsp) splash of half-and-half.
The syrup is a separate one-time cost — see the full Toasted Coconut Syrup recipe for its batch price and method. From there it’s just a 12oz pour from a 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew ($2.28, national-average grocery price, non-sale) and a 1oz splash from a $3.49 quart of half-and-half. Against a $4.79 dirty-soda-shop drink, that’s roughly $1,008/year back in your pocket at 5 drinks a week over the site’s standard 48-week year.
Swaps & Notes
- Same jar, different soda. Dirty Coconut Coke uses this exact syrup against cola’s caramel base instead of Mountain Dew’s citrus — richer and more dessert-like where this one stays bright and beachy.
- No coffee here on purpose; the espresso version of this flavor is the Toasted Coconut Latte.
- Watching sugar? The Sugar-Free Toasted Coconut Syrup swaps in at the same 1 tbsp; pair it with Diet Mountain Dew if you want the sugar total to actually drop.
- Prefer it lighter? Cut the syrup to 2 tsp — the coconut still reads even at a lighter pour.

FAQ
Is this the same as Sonic’s Ocean Water?
Same general lane — citrus soda plus coconut — but Ocean Water is usually built on Sprite with a blue coconut-flavored syrup for the color. This version uses Mountain Dew’s own citrus edge and a real toasted-coconut syrup instead, so both the color and the flavor are more natural and less candy-blue.
Why does this one foam up more than the Coke version when I pour it?
Mountain Dew is carbonated more aggressively than Coke, and a chilled syrup-and-ice base gives that CO2 more nucleation points to foam on. Pouring down the side of a tilted glass instead of straight down the middle keeps most of that fizz in the glass instead of over the rim.
Can I use Diet Mountain Dew instead?
Yes — the coconut syrup and cream splash both work the same way on diet soda. You’ll lose about 170 calories from the base soda but keep the coconut flavor and the citrus-forward lane that makes this pairing work in the first place.
