Dirty French Vanilla Dr Pepper
Uses French Vanilla Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 12oz Dr Pepper, cold
- 1 tbsp French Vanilla Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 5-7 days in the fridge -- shorter than most, since it has real cream in it)
- 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half
- Ice (enough to fill a 16oz glass)
Steps
- 1.Make a batch of French Vanilla Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- keeps about 5-7 days in the fridge -- shorter than most, since it has real cream in it.
- 2.Fill a 16oz glass with ice.
- 3.Pour 1 tbsp of the syrup directly over the ice.
- 4.Pour 12oz cold Dr Pepper over the syrup and stir gently to dissolve it -- syrup mixes into cold soda more slowly than into hot espresso, so give it a real stir, not just a swirl.
- 5.Top with 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half -- pour it slowly over the back of a spoon so it sits in a visible layer instead of a starter cup, or stir it in fully if you prefer it blended. Serve immediately with a straw.

Of this batch’s three Dr Pepper builds, this is the one that doesn’t add a new flavor so much as turn up a volume knob. Dr Pepper’s own flavor already reads a little like vanilla and cherry cola layered together, so a real-cream French Vanilla Syrup leans into a note that’s already sitting in the soda instead of introducing something new the way a spice syrup does. Because the syrup itself is built with real cream, this is also the richest-tasting of the three — and the one with the shortest fridge life. Like every dirty soda on this site, there’s no coffee or espresso anywhere in the build.
Make the Syrup First
This recipe assumes a jar of French Vanilla Syrup already in the fridge — the same syrup behind our French Vanilla Latte. It only keeps 5-7 days, shorter than most syrups on the site, since it’s made with real cream rather than just sugar and extract. Make a batch first if you haven’t; from there, this drink is a 3-minute pour with nothing cooked or heated.
Building the Drink
- Fill a 16oz glass with ice and pour 1 tbsp French Vanilla Syrup over it.
- Pour 12oz cold Dr Pepper over the syrup and stir until fully combined — because this syrup already carries real cream, it blends into cold soda a little more smoothly than a plain sugar syrup does, so a normal stir is enough.
- Top with a 1oz (2 tbsp) splash of half-and-half, over the back of a spoon for a layered look or stirred straight through. If you want a lighter version, the cream already in the syrup means you can skip the half-and-half splash entirely and still get real body.
The syrup is a separate one-time cost — see the full French Vanilla Syrup recipe for its batch price and method. From there, a 12oz pour from a 2-liter bottle of Dr Pepper ($2.28, national-average grocery price, non-sale) and a 1oz splash from a $3.49 quart of half-and-half round it out. Against a $4.79 dirty-soda-shop drink, 5 a week over the site’s standard 48-week year comes to roughly $1,010/year back in your pocket.
Swaps & Notes
- Dr Pepper carries three dirty-soda builds on this site. This one amplifies a note already in the soda; Cinnamon Toast Dr Pepper and Cookie Butter Dr Pepper both introduce baking spice that isn’t otherwise there.
- No coffee here on purpose; the espresso version of this flavor is the French Vanilla Latte.
- Only have plain Vanilla Syrup on hand? It works at the same 1 tbsp — cleaner and less custardy than French Vanilla, and it keeps longer in the fridge since it skips the cream.
- Watching sugar? The Sugar-Free French Vanilla Syrup swaps in at the same 1 tbsp; pair it with a diet or zero-sugar Dr Pepper if you want the whole drink lighter.

FAQ
Why French vanilla instead of regular vanilla?
French Vanilla Syrup is built with real cream and a touch of brown sugar, so it reads richer and more custardy than a plain cane-sugar Vanilla Syrup. Either works here — French vanilla just leans further into the cream-soda territory Dr Pepper already flirts with on its own.
How is this different from the Cinnamon Toast or Cookie Butter Dr Pepper on this site?
Those two both introduce baking spice that Dr Pepper doesn’t obviously carry on its own. This one doesn’t add a new flavor at all — it just amplifies the vanilla-and-cherry undertone that’s already in Dr Pepper’s 23-flavor blend, so it reads smoother and less spiced than its two siblings.
Do I still need the half-and-half splash if the syrup already has cream in it?
It’s optional here in a way it isn’t for the other syrups on this site. The cream in French Vanilla Syrup gives the drink real body on its own, so you can skip the splash for a lighter pour, or keep it for a fuller, more dessert-like texture.
