    Dirty Coconut Coke

The BYOB Team3 min1 drink (from a batch of Toasted Coconut Syrup, which makes about 10 servings at 2 tbsp each -- this recipe uses half a serving)~$0.59/drink once the syrup batch is made (soda + half-and-half + half a syrup serving; the syrup batch itself is a separate one-time cost -- see the syrup's own recipe page)220 cal/serving

Uses Toasted Coconut Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 12oz Coke, cold
    • 1 tbsp Toasted Coconut Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half
    • Ice (enough to fill a 16oz glass)

    Steps

    1. 1.Make a batch of Toasted Coconut Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
    2. 2.Fill a 16oz glass with ice.
    3. 3.Pour 1 tbsp of the syrup directly over the ice.
    4. 4.Pour 12oz cold Coke over the syrup and stir gently to dissolve it -- syrup mixes into cold soda more slowly than into hot espresso, so give it a real stir, not just a swirl.
    5. 5.Top with 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half -- pour it slowly over the back of a spoon so it sits in a visible layer instead of a starter cup, or stir it in fully if you prefer it blended. Serve immediately with a straw.

Toasted coconut and cola is the same flavor logic behind a dozen tiki-bar rum-and-Coke riffs, minus the rum — Coke’s own caramel-and-vanilla base plays the same role a mixer would, and toasted coconut sits on top of it instead of fighting it. The toasting matters here: raw coconut syrup can read like sunscreen against cola, while toasting the coconut first (see the syrup’s own method) pushes it toward a coconut-macaroon note that’s warmer and less one-note. This is a straight soda-syrup-cream build, no coffee anywhere in it, same as every dirty soda on the site.

    Make the Syrup First

This recipe assumes a jar of Toasted Coconut Syrup already in the fridge — the same syrup behind our Toasted Coconut Latte, good for about 2 weeks. Make a batch first if you haven’t; from there, this drink is a 3-minute pour with nothing cooked or heated.

    Building the Drink

    1. Fill a 16oz glass with ice and pour 1 tbsp Toasted Coconut Syrup over it.
    2. Pour 12oz cold Coke over the syrup and stir until it’s fully dissolved — Coke’s carbonation is moderate enough that a normal pour and a real stir (not a quick swirl) is all this one needs.
    3. Top with a 1oz (2 tbsp) splash of half-and-half, over the back of a spoon for a layered look or stirred straight through.
Dirty Soda Shop vs. Home Version
Dirty-soda-shop or Dunkin’-style flavored fountain drink (small, tax included)$4.79
Home dirty coconut coke (soda, syrup, half-and-half)~$0.59
    Savings per drink$4.20

The syrup is a separate one-time cost — see the full Toasted Coconut Syrup recipe for its batch price and method. After that, a 12oz pour from a 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola ($2.28, national-average grocery price, non-sale) and a 1oz splash from a $3.49 quart of half-and-half are the only marginal costs. Against a $4.79 dirty-soda-shop drink, 5 a week over the site’s standard 48-week year works out to roughly $1,008/year back in your pocket.

    Swaps & Notes

    • One syrup, two sodas. Dirty Coconut Mountain Dew uses this exact same Toasted Coconut Syrup on a citrusier base — Coke’s caramel notes round the coconut out into something richer and less sharp, while Mountain Dew pushes it toward a coconut-lime, “Ocean Water” direction. Same jar, two different drinks.
    • No coffee here on purpose. The coffee version of this flavor is the Toasted Coconut Latte.
    • Watching sugar? The Sugar-Free Toasted Coconut Syrup swaps in at the same 1 tbsp; pair it with a zero-sugar Coke if you want the sugar total to actually drop.
    • Prefer it lighter? Cut the syrup to 2 tsp — the toasted note still comes through even at a lighter pour.

    FAQ

Isn’t coconut and cola a strange combo?

It reads stranger on paper than it tastes — toasted coconut brings a warm, slightly nutty sweetness that plays a similar role to vanilla in a vanilla Coke, just with more body behind it. Several dirty-soda shops run near-identical builds under names like “Coconut Coke” or “Island Coke.”

Why toast the coconut instead of using a plain coconut extract syrup?

Toasting drives off the flavor compounds that read as “sunscreen” in untoasted coconut and replaces them with a browned, nutty note closer to a coconut macaroon — against cola’s own sweetness, that distinction is the difference between the drink tasting like a candle and tasting like dessert.

Is this basically a virgin piña colada with cola instead of pineapple?

Closer to a Malibu-and-Coke without the rum — coconut and cola share cola’s caramel-forward sweetness in a way pineapple and cola don’t, so this reads more like a cola with depth added than a fruit-soda mashup.
