Protein Chai Latte
Uses Chai Concentrate — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardWritten hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 4oz Chai Concentrate (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
- 4oz milk
- 1 scoop (about 30g) whey protein powder, vanilla or unflavored
- Optional: 1-2oz brewed espresso, for a protein dirty chai (see note below)
Steps
- 1.Whisk the whey protein into the cold milk in a separate cup until fully smooth, before any heat is involved.
- 2.Warm 4oz of the chai concentrate in a small saucepan or the microwave until hot, but not boiling.
- 3.Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F.
- 4.Combine the warm concentrate and protein-milk mixture in your cup and stir. If making it dirty, pull a shot of espresso and add it to the cup before the milk.
- 5.Serve immediately.

This is our regular Chai Latte with one change: a scoop of whey protein whisked into the milk before it’s steamed. Same spiced black-tea concentrate, same no-espresso-required build — just built to also cover a meaningful chunk of your day’s protein.
Building the Latte
- Whisk 1 scoop of whey protein into 4oz of cold milk in a separate cup until completely smooth.
- Warm 4oz of Chai Concentrate in a small saucepan or the microwave until hot, but not boiling.
- Steam or froth the protein-milk mixture to about 150°F.
- Combine the warm concentrate and protein-milk mixture in your cup and stir.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a chai latte plus a protein-powder add-on charge, dairy milk, black tea bags and ground spices at typical grocery pricing, whey protein at ~$0.88/scoop. At 5 protein chai lattes a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,320/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Want It Dirty? Add a Shot of Espresso
Same move as the regular Chai Latte: pull a double shot and add it to your cup before the milk, nothing else changes. It’s still the one variant in this family that genuinely needs an espresso machine (or a moka pot/strong AeroPress shot as a stand-in).
Swaps & Notes
- No espresso machine and don’t want one? Then this is your default chai — skip the dirty variant and you’ve got a genuinely complete protein drink with zero coffee equipment involved.
- Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients — a bit less milk (3oz cold, shaken with the protein, instead of 4oz steamed).
- Protein total: about 24g from the whey scoop, plus roughly 4g from the 4oz of dairy milk — around 28g total (27g on the iced 3oz-milk version).
- Different protein source? Casein works but thickens more than whey when warmed with the concentrate; plant-based proteins can leave a slightly gritty finish — see our Plant-Based Protein Mocha for the full plant-protein technique notes.

FAQ
Do I need an espresso machine to make this?
No — a regular protein chai latte is spiced tea concentrate, protein-blended milk, and nothing else. You only need espresso if you’re making it a protein dirty chai.
Do I need to make the concentrate every time I want this drink?
No — one batch keeps about a week in the fridge and covers roughly 6 drinks, same as our regular Chai Latte.
Will the protein powder clash with the chai spices?
Not noticeably — most whey proteins carry a mild vanilla or unflavored sweetness that blends into the cinnamon-cardamom-ginger flavor rather than fighting it. Chocolate-flavored whey is the one to skip here; it muddies the spice profile more than vanilla or unflavored does.
