Peanut Butter Cup Mocha
Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 8oz milk
- 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
- 1 tbsp powdered peanut butter (e.g. PB2), whisked into the milk
Steps
- 1.Whisk the powdered peanut butter into the cold milk until fully smooth, before any heat is involved.
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) directly into your serving cup.
- 3.Stir 2 tbsp of Mocha Sauce into the hot espresso until fully combined.
- 4.Steam or froth the peanut-butter-milk mixture to about 150°F and pour it over the espresso-sauce mixture.
- 5.Serve immediately.

Contains peanuts. This recipe uses real powdered peanut butter — skip it for anyone with a peanut allergy, and see the swap note below for a peanut-free version of the same base drink.
This is the chocolate-and-peanut-butter classic built on our own Mocha Sauce plus real powdered peanut butter, not a “peanut butter flavored” syrup. It’s a lighter-protein sibling of our Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha — same peanut butter sourcing, no whey scoop, for anyone who wants the flavor without stacking a protein boost on top.
Why Powdered, Not Regular, Peanut Butter
Regular peanut butter is mostly fat by calorie — a tablespoon runs about 95-100 calories, most of it fat, with only about 4g of protein. Powdered peanut butter (the defatted, PB2-style kind) strips most of that fat out in processing, leaving a tablespoon at around 23 calories — a meaningfully lighter add to a drink that already has milk and a cocoa sauce in it. It also dissolves into milk more easily than a spoonful of the sticky regular jar version.
Make the Sauce First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Mocha Sauce in the fridge — cocoa and sugar simmered into a pourable sauce, keeping about 2 weeks.
Building the Mocha
- Whisk 1 tbsp powdered peanut butter into 8oz of cold milk until completely smooth.
- Pull a double shot of espresso into your cup and stir in 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce while it’s hot.
- Steam or froth the peanut-butter-milk mixture and pour it over the espresso-sauce mix.
The sauce batch itself is a one-time ~$1.30 and makes about 12 drinks. Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a specialty flavor-combo mocha, dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, powdered peanut butter at ~$0.13/tbsp (see the frontmatter comment for the full jar-pricing math, same sourcing as our Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha). At 5 peanut butter cup mochas a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,414/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Swaps & Notes
- Nut/peanut allergy? Skip the peanut butter powder entirely and this becomes our regular Mocha — the sauce carries the drink fine on its own, no substitution needed.
- No powdered peanut butter on hand? Regular peanut butter works, but whisk it into the hot espresso first (it dissolves better warm) rather than the cold milk — expect roughly 75 more calories and a slightly thicker texture.
- Want more protein with this same flavor? See our Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha, which adds a whey scoop on top of this same peanut-butter-and-mocha base.
- Want the blended version? See our Peanut Butter Cup Frappé — same flavor, blended, same allergen note.

FAQ
Does this drink actually contain peanuts?
Yes — the powdered peanut butter is a real peanut product, not a peanut-flavored substitute. Treat this exactly as you would any peanut-containing food for allergy purposes; skip it (see the swap note above) if peanuts are a concern for anyone drinking it.
How is this different from your Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Mocha?
That recipe adds a full scoop of whey protein on top of this same peanut-butter-and-mocha-sauce base, aimed at a higher-protein result (~35g total). This page skips the whey scoop for anyone who wants the flavor without the protein boost or the extra cost/calories that come with it.
Can I use real peanut butter instead of the powdered kind?
Yes — whisk it into the hot espresso rather than the cold milk, since it dissolves better warm. Expect a thicker texture and roughly 75 more calories per drink than the powdered version above.
