    Mocha Affogato

The BYOB Team3 min1 serving (from a batch of Mocha Sauce that makes about 12 servings)~$0.78/serving after the sauce batch (~$1.30 one-time for the sauce, makes ~12 servings)201 cal/serving

Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 2 scoops (about 4oz / 1/2 cup) good vanilla ice cream, well-frozen
    • 1 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • 2oz espresso, freshly pulled and hot (or a double shot of strong moka pot coffee)
    • Optional: extra chocolate shavings or a chocolate-sauce drizzle on top, to finish

    Steps

    1. 1.Make a batch of Mocha Sauce ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge and covers many servings of this.
    2. 2.Scoop the ice cream into a small glass or cup while it's still hard and cold.
    3. 3.Drizzle 1 tbsp of the mocha sauce over the ice cream.
    4. 4.Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) and pour it directly over the ice cream and sauce at the table, right before eating.
    5. 5.Top with extra chocolate shavings if using, and serve immediately with a small spoon.

This is our Classic Affogato’s technique — hot espresso poured over cold vanilla ice cream at the table — with a drizzle of real Mocha Sauce added first, so it’s genuine cocoa melting into the mix, not a chocolate syrup with minimal actual chocolate.

Make the Sauce First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Mocha Sauce in the fridge — it’s a 15-minute batch that keeps 2 weeks and covers many servings of this. If you haven’t made a batch yet, go do that first, then come back here.

    The Technique

    1. Scoop 2 scoops (about 4oz) of vanilla ice cream into a small glass or cup, straight from the freezer.
    2. Drizzle 1 tbsp of the mocha sauce over the ice cream.
    3. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) and pour it directly over the top, at the table, right before eating.
    4. Top with extra chocolate shavings if you want it richer-looking, and serve immediately.
Café/Gelateria Flavored Affogato vs. Home Version
    Café or gelateria flavored affogato~$7.00
    Home mocha affogato~$0.78
    Savings per serving$6.22

The sauce batch itself is a one-time ~$1.30 and makes about 12 servings’ worth of drizzle — see the full sauce recipe for the batch method. Assumptions: standard supermarket vanilla ice cream, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, and a flavored-affogato price at the higher end of a typical dessert menu since flavored versions usually cost more than the plain one.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Want it without chocolate? See our Classic Affogato for the plain version.
    • No espresso machine? A moka pot or strong AeroPress shot both work.
    • Prefer caramel? See our Salted Caramel Affogato for the same technique with real salted caramel syrup instead.

    FAQ

Is the chocolate sauce real chocolate?

It’s real unsweetened cocoa cooked into a cane-sugar syrup base — see the Mocha Sauce recipe for the exact batch. Not a chocolate-flavored syrup with minimal actual cocoa content.

Should I stir the sauce, ice cream, and espresso together?

We’d leave it layered and let it melt together naturally as you eat — the contrast between hot espresso, cold ice cream, and rich chocolate is the point. Stirring it into a uniform mixture turns it into more of a mocha milkshake than an affogato.

Can I use chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla?

You can, though it stacks two chocolate flavors instead of contrasting cream against chocolate — vanilla is the traditional base for a reason here, letting the mocha sauce and espresso both come through clearly.
