    Coconut Cold Foam

The BYOB Team5 min1 drink topping (about 1/2 cup foam)~$0.80/topping (heavy cream + a portion of Toasted Coconut Syrup)310 cal/serving

Uses Toasted Coconut Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 1/3 cup (about 2.7oz) cold heavy cream (36%+ milkfat -- labeled "heavy whipping cream," not just "whipping cream")
    • 1 tbsp Toasted Coconut Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • Optional: a small pinch of toasted coconut flakes on top, for garnish

    Steps

    1. 1.Make sure the heavy cream is well-chilled -- straight from the fridge. Cold cream whips faster and holds a more stable foam.
    2. 2.Combine the cold heavy cream and toasted coconut syrup in a tall, narrow jar or cup.
    3. 3.Froth with a handheld milk frother for 30-45 seconds, or blend in a blender on high for 15-20 seconds, or seal in a jar and shake vigorously for 45-60 seconds -- stop once it thickens into a pourable, softly mounded foam. This is NOT whipped cream: stop well before it holds stiff peaks.
    4. 4.Spoon or pour the foam over the top of your own iced coffee, cold brew, or latte -- it floats on top rather than mixing in, because it's less dense than the drink underneath.
    5. 5.Top with a pinch of toasted coconut flakes if using. Serve immediately -- it holds its float for 10-15 minutes before starting to settle into the drink.

This is our cold foam base technique with real Toasted Coconut Syrup whipped in — a topping, not a drink on its own. Spoon or pour it over a coffee, cold brew, or latte you’ve already made.

    The Technique

Combine 1/3 cup cold heavy cream and 1 tbsp Toasted Coconut Syrup in a tall, narrow container, then whip it one of three ways:

    • Handheld milk frother wand: 30-45 seconds.
    • Blender: 15-20 seconds on high.
    • Shake by hand: seal in a jar and shake vigorously for 45-60 seconds.

Stop as soon as it’s thickened into a soft, pourable foam that mounds slightly — past that point it starts turning into stiff whipped cream, which won’t float and pour the same way.

Café Cold Foam Add-On vs. Home Version
Café cold foam add-on (topping charge only)~$0.95
    Home coconut cold foam~$0.80
    Savings per topping$0.15

Assumptions: standard grocery-pricing heavy whipping cream (~$4.29/pint) and our own Toasted Coconut Syrup batch cost. As with our other cold foam toppings, the real savings case is pairing this with a home-brewed coffee base rather than a café drink entirely — the topping charge alone is a small line item to begin with.

    Real Stability Notes

    • Cold cream whips faster and holds better than room-temperature cream.
    • Best made fresh — it holds its floating layer for about 10-15 minutes on top of an iced drink before settling in.
    • Leftover foam keeps a few hours in the fridge but deflates — re-whip 10-15 seconds before reusing.
    • Don’t over-whip past the soft-foam stage, or it turns into whipped cream and eventually butter.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Only have half-and-half? It’ll froth thinner and less stable than heavy cream’s 36%+ fat content.
    • Want it dairy-free instead? Full-fat canned coconut cream (the thick part skimmed off a chilled can) whips in a similar way to heavy cream and doubles down on the coconut flavor — a genuinely different but reasonable direction, not covered by the cost/calorie math above.
    • Prefer a different flavor? See our Pumpkin, Vanilla Sweet Cream, or Salted Caramel Cold Foam — same base technique, different syrup.

    FAQ

Does this use real coconut, or just coconut extract?

The Toasted Coconut Syrup it’s built on uses real toasted coconut flakes, steeped into a sugar syrup and strained out — not just coconut extract in a jar. See that recipe for the full method.

Can I use coconut milk instead of heavy cream?

Not as a direct swap for the foam itself — canned coconut cream (the thick, skimmed part) is the closer substitute; regular canned coconut milk or carton coconut milk beverage is too thin to whip into a stable foam. See the Swaps & Notes above for the dairy-free direction.

How long does the foam hold its shape on top of a drink?

About 10-15 minutes before it starts settling into the drink below, same as our other cold foam toppings.
