White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha (Made at Home for a Fraction of the Price)

The BYOB Team5 min1 drink (from a batch of White Mocha Sauce that makes about 12 servings)$1.11/drink268 cal/drink

Uses White Mocha Sauce (Standard) — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

Ingredients & steps

Standard

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

Ingredients

  • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
  • 8oz whole milk (or full-fat oat milk), steamed or frothed
  • 2 tbsp White Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
  • 1/16 tsp (a few drops) pure peppermint extract, added directly to the hot espresso -- not peppermint oil, which is much stronger
  • Optional: whipped cream and crushed candy cane or white chocolate shavings for topping

Steps

  1. 1.Make a batch of White Mocha Sauce ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge, so this is a once-a-week step, not a per-drink one.
  2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee) directly into your serving cup.
  3. 3.Stir in 2 tbsp of the white mocha sauce and a few drops (about 1/16 tsp) of pure peppermint extract while the espresso is hot, until fully combined -- start with less peppermint than you think you need, it's potent and easy to over-pour.
  4. 4.Steam or froth 8oz of whole milk or full-fat oat milk to about 150°F and pour over the espresso mixture.
  5. 5.Top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane or white chocolate shavings if using. Serve immediately.

This is not the same drink as our Copycat Peppermint Mocha — that one uses our dark Mocha Sauce (real cocoa) with peppermint mixed in. This one uses our White Mocha Sauce (real white chocolate melted with cream — no cocoa solids at all) with a few drops of peppermint extract added straight to the espresso instead. Same holiday flavor family, genuinely different base: one is a cocoa-and-sugar sauce, the other is a dairy-and-white-chocolate sauce, and they taste noticeably different once milk goes in — richer and creamier here versus the darker, more classically “mocha” chocolate-mint of the cocoa version.

Two Peppermint Mochas, Not One

Worth being explicit about, since the names are easy to mix up: Copycat Peppermint Mocha = dark Mocha Sauce + peppermint, built as one combined sauce batch. White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha (this recipe) = White Mocha Sauce + a small peppermint addition stirred in at drink-assembly time, not baked into the sauce batch itself. The white chocolate version keeps the peppermint as a separate, per-drink addition rather than a sauce ingredient because the White Mocha Sauce only keeps about a week in the fridge (it’s a fresh dairy sauce) — brewing a whole white-chocolate-and-peppermint batch that might not get used up in time is a needless risk when a few drops per drink does the same job.

Make the Sauce First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of White Mocha Sauce in the fridge — a 15-minute batch that makes about 12 drinks’ worth and keeps about a week. If you haven’t made a batch yet, make that first, then come back here.

Building the Drink

  1. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) into your cup, or brew a strong coffee/moka pot equivalent.
  2. Stir in 2 tbsp of the white mocha sauce and a few drops (about 1/16 tsp) of pure peppermint extract while the espresso is hot, until fully melted in. Start light — peppermint extract is potent and varies in strength by brand, and you can always add a drop more, but you can’t take it back out.
  3. Steam or froth 8oz of whole milk (or full-fat oat milk) to about 150°F and pour over the espresso mixture.
  4. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane or white chocolate shavings if you want the full seasonal café look.
Café White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha vs. Home Version
Café grande white chocolate peppermint mocha (seasonal specialty pricing, tax included)$6.75
Home white chocolate peppermint mocha (espresso, milk, sauce, peppermint)~$1.11
Savings per drink$5.64

The sauce batch itself is a one-time ~$3.20 and makes about 12 drinks — see the full sauce recipe for the method. The peppermint extract adds only a few cents per drink at this dose (1/16 tsp), well under the cost of buying a second bottled syrup.

Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average seasonal specialty pricing (these run at or above the darker Copycat Peppermint Mocha most chains also sell in the same window), whole milk, real white chocolate and cream at typical grocery pricing, pure peppermint extract at typical grocery pricing. This one’s genuinely seasonal — figure roughly 8-9 weeks of Nov-Dec availability, same window as our Copycat Peppermint Mocha. At 3 white chocolate peppermint mochas a week across that window, that’s about 24-27 drinks and $135-$152 saved for the season.

Swaps & Notes

  • No espresso machine? A moka pot or strong AeroPress shot works fine.
  • Too strong on the peppermint? Thin an individual serving with a splash of extra milk rather than remaking the batch weaker.
  • This drink costs more than our dark Copycat Peppermint Mocha (~$1.11 vs. ~$0.95) for the same reason White Mocha costs more than Mocha — real white chocolate and cream cost more than cocoa powder and sugar. Still a large saving over café pricing either way.
  • Watching sugar? White chocolate is roughly half sugar by weight no matter which version you buy. See the Sugar-Free White Mocha Sauce if that matters to you, and add the same peppermint dose to it.
  • Iced version: use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients to switch — less milk (about 4oz cold over ice instead of 8oz steamed), same method as every other iced drink on the site.

FAQ

Is this the same as your Copycat Peppermint Mocha?

No. The Copycat Peppermint Mocha uses our dark cocoa Mocha Sauce with peppermint blended directly into the sauce batch. This recipe uses our White Mocha Sauce (real white chocolate and cream, no cocoa) with peppermint extract stirred in per drink instead. They’re two different bases and two different flavor profiles, both peppermint-flavored.

Why isn’t the peppermint mixed into a white-chocolate-peppermint sauce batch, the way the dark version does it?

The White Mocha Sauce only keeps about a week in the fridge, since it’s a fresh dairy sauce rather than a shelf-stable sugar syrup. Baking a full 12-serving batch of white-chocolate-peppermint sauce risks not using it up in time; adding a few drops of peppermint extract per drink gets the same result without that risk.

Do I need to make the sauce every time I want this drink?

No — one batch of White Mocha Sauce covers about 12 drinks over about a week. This page is just the 5-minute assembly step, plus the peppermint addition.
