    Pumpkin Spice Cream Soda

The BYOB Team3 min1 drink (from a batch of Pumpkin Spice Syrup, which makes about 12 servings at 2 tbsp each -- this recipe uses half a serving)~$0.54/drink once the syrup batch is made (soda + half-and-half + half a syrup serving; the syrup batch itself is a separate one-time cost -- see the syrup's own recipe page)263 cal/serving

Uses Pumpkin Spice Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 12oz Cream Soda, cold
    • 1 tbsp Pumpkin Spice Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half
    • Ice (enough to fill a 16oz glass)

    Steps

    1. 1.Make a batch of Pumpkin Spice Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
    2. 2.Fill a 16oz glass with ice.
    3. 3.Pour 1 tbsp of the syrup directly over the ice.
    4. 4.Pour 12oz cold Cream Soda over the syrup and stir gently to dissolve it -- syrup mixes into cold soda more slowly than into hot espresso, so give it a real stir, not just a swirl.
    5. 5.Top with 1oz (2 tbsp) half-and-half -- pour it slowly over the back of a spoon so it sits in a visible layer instead of a starter cup, or stir it in fully if you prefer it blended. Serve immediately with a straw.

Dirty sodas built on baking-spice syrups tend to reach for root beer by default, but that’s the wrong soda for pumpkin spice specifically. Root beer’s sassafras note is its own strong spice signature, and it fights pumpkin spice’s cinnamon-clove-nutmeg blend rather than supporting it. Cream Soda’s clean vanilla base is the correct pairing — the same logic behind our Gingerbread Cream Soda, which makes the same soda choice for the same reason. No coffee or espresso in this drink at all, same as every other dirty soda on the site.

This is a seasonal build, following the same fall-flavor window as our Copycat Pumpkin Spice Latte — it shows up on menus in late summer and runs through November.

Make the Syrup First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Pumpkin Spice Syrup in the fridge — real pumpkin puree and a four-spice blend, keeping about 2 weeks. If you haven’t made a batch yet, go do that first, then come back here.

    Building the Drink

    1. Fill a 16oz glass with ice.
    2. Pour 1 tbsp of the pumpkin spice syrup directly over the ice.
    3. Pour 12oz cold Cream Soda over the syrup and stir it in.
    4. Finish with a 1oz (2 tbsp) splash of half-and-half, poured slowly over the back of a spoon if you want the layered look, or stirred straight in if you don’t.
Dirty Soda Shop vs. Home Version
Dirty-soda-shop or Dunkin’-style seasonal fountain drink (small, tax included)$4.79
Home pumpkin spice cream soda (soda, syrup, half-and-half)~$0.54
    Savings per drink$4.25

The syrup batch itself is a separate one-time cost (~$0.95, makes about 12 drinks) — see the full Pumpkin Spice Syrup recipe. Assumptions: 12oz pour from a 2-liter bottle of A&W Cream Soda ($2.18, national-average grocery price, non-sale), a 1oz half-and-half splash (quart at $3.49), and national-average dirty-soda-shop/Dunkin’-style seasonal pricing. This flavor tends to show up a little earlier than the holiday flavors and runs through November — if you get 3 of these a week for the next 10 weeks of the season, that’s roughly $128 saved this fall.

    Swaps & Notes

    • No coffee, and that’s correct. Dirty sodas are a soda-and-syrup build, not a coffee drink; if you want the coffee version, see the Copycat Pumpkin Spice Latte instead.
    • Why not root beer? Root beer’s sassafras-and-wintergreen profile is a spice note in its own right, and it competes with pumpkin spice’s cinnamon-clove-nutmeg blend instead of getting out of the way. Cream Soda’s plain vanilla sweetness lets the pumpkin spice syrup actually be the flavor.
    • Watching sugar? Swap in the Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Syrup at the same 1 tbsp.

    Recipe Card Summary

    Pumpkin Spice Cream Soda

    • 12oz Cream Soda + 1 tbsp Pumpkin Spice Syrup (made ahead) + 1oz half-and-half, over ice
    • Prep time: 3 minutes (after the syrup is made) · Total: 3 minutes
    • Cost: ~$0.54/drink vs. $4.79 dirty-soda-shop equivalent

    FAQ

Why Cream Soda instead of root beer?

Root beer’s own sassafras spice profile fights pumpkin spice’s cinnamon-clove-nutmeg blend instead of pairing with it. Cream Soda’s plain vanilla base is neutral enough to let the pumpkin spice syrup carry the flavor — the same reasoning behind our Gingerbread Cream Soda’s soda choice.

Is this the same syrup as the Pumpkin Spice Latte?

Yes — same batch, same syrup. This just skips the espresso and milk and builds on Cream Soda instead.

How long is this actually in season?

It tends to show up on menus a little earlier than the holiday flavors (Gingerbread, Peppermint) and runs through November — see the seasonal savings math above for a realistic per-season number instead of a full-year figure.
