Matcha Frappé (No Espresso Required)
Uses Matcha Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 2 tbsp Matcha Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
- 1.5 cups ice (about 10-12 standard cubes)
- 4oz cold milk
- Optional: 1-2oz brewed espresso, for a matchaccino
- Optional: a light dusting of sifted matcha powder for topping
Steps
- 1.Make a batch of Matcha Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about a week in the fridge, so this is a once-a-week step.
- 2.Add the matcha syrup, ice, and cold milk to a blender. If making it a matchaccino, pull a shot of espresso and add it too.
- 3.Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth and slushy with no ice chunks left.
- 4.Pour into a 16oz glass, dust with a little extra sifted matcha if using, and serve immediately with a straw.

Our Matcha Latte needs no espresso machine at all — this blends that same matcha syrup with milk and ice into a green tea frappé instead of pouring it over cubes or steaming it. Add a shot of espresso if you want it dirty; skip it if you don’t.
Make the Syrup First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Matcha Syrup in the fridge. It keeps about a week (shorter than our sugar-only syrups, since matcha’s flavor and color both fade faster than cane sugar keeps) and makes roughly 12 drinks per batch. If you haven’t made one yet, go do that first, then come back here.
Building the Frappé
- Add 2 tbsp of the matcha syrup, 1.5 cups of ice, and 4oz cold milk to a blender. If you want a matchaccino, pull a shot of espresso and add it in too.
- Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth and slushy with no ice chunks left.
- Pour into a 16oz glass, dust with a little extra sifted matcha if using, and serve immediately with a straw.
The syrup batch itself is a one-time ~$6.17 and makes about 12 drinks — culinary-grade matcha is the priciest ingredient on the site gram for gram, which is why this frappé costs more than our cane-sugar-syrup flavors even though it has no espresso in it. See the full syrup recipe for the batch method.
Assumptions: grande-size blended drink, national-average chain pricing, dairy milk. No seasonal ceiling — at 5 a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,306/year back in your pocket versus the café version.
Swaps & Notes
- Want it dirty? Add 1-2oz of brewed espresso before blending for a dirty matcha frappé — not counted in the base cost/calorie math above since it’s an optional add-in, the same convention the hot latte page uses.
- Plan around the shorter shelf life. Matcha syrup keeps about a week, shorter than our plain sugar syrups — make a batch size you’ll actually get through.
- Watching sugar? This is Standard-tier only for now. Blend the Sugar-Free Matcha Latte iced with ice yourself for a lower-sugar version today.

FAQ
Why does this cost more than most of the site’s flavored frappés, even without espresso?
Culinary-grade matcha is genuinely expensive per gram — more than any cane-sugar syrup base on the site. Even at $0.81/drink, it’s still a fraction of the $6.25 café price.
Can I make this without a blender?
The iced Matcha Latte uses the same syrup poured over ice instead of blended.
Why does the syrup only keep about a week?
Matcha’s bright green color and fresh, slightly vegetal flavor both fade faster than a plain cane-sugar syrup would spoil — so a week is about the practical flavor window, not a food-safety cutoff.
