Maple Apple Crisp Syrup (Clean-Ingredient)
Compare the 3 tiers of this drink
Same drink, three ways. Clean-Ingredient is our top recommendation -- Standard and Sugar-Free are the other options.
Maple Apple Crisp Syrup (Clean-Ingredient)
- Key ingredient
- Real maple syrup, reduced with real apple cider (no refined sugar)
- Cost per serving
- $0.70
- Calories
- 90
- Sugar
- ~19g sugar per 2 tbsp serving, from real maple syrup and the reduced cider's natural fruit sugar -- not a lower-sugar recipe, similar to the Standard syrup's brown sugar, just from whole-food sources
Apple Crisp Syrup (Standard) →
- Key ingredient
- Brown sugar, reduced with real apple cider
- Cost per serving
- $0.09
- Calories
- 73
- Sugar
- ~13g added sugar per 2 tbsp serving (from the brown sugar), plus a little more from the reduced cider's own natural fruit sugar
Sugar-Free Apple Crisp Syrup (Honestly, Lower-Sugar) →
- Key ingredient
- Monk fruit/allulose syrup with a small amount of reduced real apple cider (not fully sugar-free)
- Cost per serving
- $0.27
- Calories
- 5
- Sugar
- Under 1g added sugar per 2 tbsp serving -- the sweetener itself is sugar-free, but the reduced cider carries a small amount of natural fruit sugar, a ~85-90% reduction from the Standard syrup, not a literal zero
Ingredients & steps
Clean-IngredientIngredients
- 1 cup apple cider (unfiltered, not apple juice)
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Steps
- 1.Combine the apple cider, maple syrup, cinnamon stick, and nutmeg in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- 2.Bring to a gentle simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, 20-25 minutes, until reduced by about half and syrupy enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- 3.Remove from heat, discard the cinnamon stick, and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool completely -- it thickens more than you'd expect once it's cold.
- 4.Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Use 2 tbsp per drink, stirred into hot espresso before adding milk.
Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Clean-ingredient" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. If you're managing diabetes, a caffeine sensitivity, pregnancy, or another condition, check with a doctor or dietitian before making a recipe part of your routine. Read the full disclaimer.
This is the syrup behind our Clean-Ingredient Apple Crisp Latte — real maple syrup standing in for the Standard syrup’s brown sugar, reduced down with the same real apple cider. Same real-cider reduction method as our Apple Crisp Syrup (Standard), with maple in place of brown sugar for a rounder, more whole-food ingredient list — the same swap our Maple Caramel and Maple Cinnamon Dolce syrups make for their tiers.
What “Clean-Ingredient” Means Here
Apple cider, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract — five ingredients you could read off the label without a dictionary, no refined granulated sugar and no artificial apple flavoring anywhere in the batch. Like our other maple-based Clean-Ingredient syrups, this isn’t a lower-sugar swap — maple syrup carries a similar amount of sugar to brown sugar, gram for gram, so this version isn’t meaningfully lighter than the Standard syrup on sugar or calories. The upgrade here is ingredient sourcing: real maple instead of refined cane sugar, for a rounder, more complex sweetness.
The Syrup
Combine 1 cup apple cider, 1/2 cup pure maple syrup, a cinnamon stick, and 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer and let it reduce, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes, until it’s cut by about half and coats the back of a spoon. Off the heat, discard the cinnamon stick and stir in 1/2 tsp vanilla extract. Let it cool completely — it thickens noticeably more once it’s cold.
Store the finished syrup in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It makes roughly 6 drinks’ worth at 2 tbsp per serving.
Assumptions: real maple syrup at typical grocery pricing (~$8-9 for a 12oz bottle, same figure our other Clean-Ingredient syrups use) and real apple cider at typical fall grocery pricing. Maple syrup is the priciest ingredient here, which is why this is the most expensive of the three apple crisp tiers – see the Clean-Ingredient Apple Crisp Latte for the full per-drink math against café pricing.
Storage & Shelf Life
- Keeps about 2 weeks in a sealed jar in the fridge — the simmer-and-reduce step here means it keeps as long as the Standard syrup, unlike our no-cook Clean-Ingredient bases.
- Thickens more in the fridge than the Standard syrup does — a few seconds in a warm water bath loosens it back up.
- Double the batch if you go through apple crisp lattes quickly — everything scales evenly (2 cups cider, 1 cup maple syrup, 2 cinnamon sticks).
Swaps & Notes
- This isn’t a lower-sugar or lower-calorie recipe. Same honest note our other maple-based Clean-Ingredient syrups carry: swapping brown sugar for maple trades one concentrated sugar for another. If lower sugar is your goal, see the Sugar-Free Apple Crisp Syrup instead.
- No apple cider on hand? Cloudy, unfiltered apple juice works in a pinch, though the reduction will taste a bit thinner than one made with real cider.
What to Make With This
2 tbsp of this syrup, stirred into hot espresso before adding steamed milk, is the Clean-Ingredient Apple Crisp Latte. If cost matters more than ingredient sourcing, the Apple Crisp Syrup (Standard) uses the same real-cider method with brown sugar; if minimizing sugar is the priority, see the Sugar-Free Apple Crisp Syrup.

FAQ
Is this actually lower in sugar than the Standard apple crisp syrup?
No, and we don’t want to imply otherwise – it’s a similar amount of sugar, just from maple and concentrated cider instead of brown sugar and cider. If lower sugar is your goal, see the Sugar-Free Apple Crisp Syrup.
Why is this the most expensive of the three tiers?
Real maple syrup runs several times the cost of brown sugar per cup, and this recipe uses half a cup of it. That’s the honest tradeoff of whole-ingredient sourcing over a refined-sugar syrup – same reason our other maple-based Clean-Ingredient syrups cost more than their Standard-tier counterparts.
Do I need to make this every time I want a latte?
No — one batch covers about 6 drinks over two weeks. The Clean-Ingredient Apple Crisp Latte recipe assumes you already have a jar on hand.
