Java Chip Frappé
Uses Mocha Sauce — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps
StandardIngredients
- 2oz espresso, freshly pulled (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/cold brew)
- 2 tbsp Mocha Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
- 1 tbsp mini chocolate chips (semisweet), plus a few extra for garnish
- 1.5 cups ice (about 10-12 standard cubes)
- 4oz cold milk
- Optional: whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle for topping
Steps
- 1.Make a batch of Mocha Sauce ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee/cold brew) -- no need to cool it first.
- 3.Add the espresso, mocha sauce, mini chocolate chips, ice, and cold milk to a blender.
- 4.Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until the ice is smooth and slushy -- the chips will break down into small flecks rather than staying whole, which is normal and part of the texture.
- 5.Pour into a 16oz glass, top with whipped cream, a few whole chips, and a chocolate drizzle if using, and serve immediately with a straw.

Our Mocha Frappé is the plain chocolate-coffee base; this is that same drink with real mini chocolate chips blended directly in, the same way the format’s best-known chain version does it — chunkier and crunchier, not just a mocha with more chocolate flavoring.
Make the Sauce First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Mocha Sauce in the fridge — it keeps about 2 weeks and makes roughly 12 drinks’ worth. If you haven’t made a batch yet, go do that first, then come back here.
Building the Frappé
- Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz), or brew strong coffee/cold brew instead.
- Add the espresso, 2 tbsp of the mocha sauce, 1 tbsp mini chocolate chips, 1.5 cups of ice, and 4oz cold milk to a blender.
- Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth and slushy — the chips break into small flecks rather than staying whole chunks, which is expected.
- Pour into a 16oz glass, top with whipped cream, a few whole chips, and a chocolate drizzle if using, and serve immediately with a straw.
The sauce batch itself is a one-time ~$1.30 and makes about 12 drinks — see the full sauce recipe for the batch method. The mini chocolate chips are a per-drink grocery add (about $0.13/drink at a typical $3/12oz bag) rather than a batch you make ahead.
Assumptions: grande-size blended drink, chain pricing (java chip typically runs a real upcharge over plain mocha at most chains), dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans, a standard $3/12oz bag of semisweet mini chocolate chips. No seasonal ceiling — at 5 a week over the site’s standard 48-week year, that’s roughly $1,498/year back in your pocket versus the café version. The $7.00 café baseline is the average of two real, dated receipts (9/29/2026) from two different store locations — $6.90 and $7.10 — for a grande hot seasonal specialty drink, not a modeled national average.
Swaps & Notes
- The chips will break up when blended — that’s expected and part of the texture. If you want a few visible whole chips, save a small pinch to fold in or garnish with after blending, rather than blending your entire portion.
- No espresso machine? Strong cold brew or a moka pot shot both work fine.
- Just want the plain version? See our Mocha Frappé — same base, no chips.
- Watching sugar? This is Standard-tier only for now. Blend the Sugar-Free Mocha iced with ice, adding sugar-free chocolate chips of your choice, for a lower-sugar version today.

FAQ
Will the chocolate chips stay whole after blending?
Mostly no — a home blender will break most mini chips into small flecks rather than keeping them whole, similar to how the chain version’s chips get processed. If you want some whole-chip texture, fold in an extra pinch after blending instead of blending your whole portion.
Can I make this without a blender?
Not really for this specific drink — the blended-in chips are part of what defines “java chip” versus a plain iced mocha. If you don’t have a blender, the iced Mocha with a few whole chips stirred in gets you closer than trying to build this one without blending.
What kind of chocolate chips work best?
Mini semisweet chips blend down more evenly than standard-size chips — Nestle Toll House Mini Morsels or a store-brand equivalent both work fine. Standard-size chips work too, they just leave larger flecks.
