Caffeine-Boosted Vanilla Frappé (with an Honest Combined-Caffeine Number)

The BYOB Team5 min1 drink (from a batch of Vanilla Syrup that makes about 12 servings)$0.83/drink152 cal/drink

Uses Vanilla Syrup — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

    Ingredients & steps

    Standard

    Ingredients

    • 4oz espresso, freshly pulled (two double shots -- one for the base build, one as the boost)
    • 2 tbsp Vanilla Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
    • 1.5 cups ice (about 10-12 standard cubes)
    • 4oz cold milk
    • Optional: whipped cream for topping

    Steps

    1. 1.Make a batch of Vanilla Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
    2. 2.Pull two double shots of espresso (4oz total) -- no need to cool them first.
    3. 3.Add all 4oz of the espresso, the vanilla syrup, ice, and cold milk to a blender.
    4. 4.Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth and slushy with no ice chunks left.
    5. 5.Pour into a 16oz glass, top with whipped cream if using, and serve immediately with a straw. Read the caffeine note below before making this a daily habit.

Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Ingredient-Honest" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. If you're managing diabetes, a caffeine sensitivity, pregnancy, or another condition, check with a doctor or dietitian before making a recipe part of your routine. Read the full disclaimer.

This is our regular vanilla frappé build with one deliberate change: a second espresso shot blended in alongside the first, instead of the usual single double shot. We’re leading with the combined caffeine number, not the flavor, because that’s the part of this recipe that actually matters.

Combined Caffeine: Read This Before You Make One
Base shot (2oz double espresso, the normal frappé build)~128mg
Added boost shot (2oz double espresso)~128mg
    Combined caffeine, this drink~256mg

That ~256mg is roughly double a normal frappé’s caffeine, and it sits at a bit over half the FDA’s ~400mg/day guidance for healthy adults, in one drink. It’s not a dangerous single-serving amount for most healthy adults, but it’s a real, deliberate near-doubling — treat this as an occasional boost, not something to layer under a normal coffee routine on the same day.

    Building the Frappé

    1. Pull two double shots of espresso (4oz total) — one is the base, one is the boost. No need to cool either first.
    2. Add all 4oz of espresso, 2 tbsp of the vanilla syrup, 1.5 cups of ice, and 4oz cold milk to a blender.
    3. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth and slushy.
    4. Pour into a 16oz glass, top with whipped cream if using, and serve immediately.
Café Extra-Shot Frappé vs. Home Version
Café grande vanilla Frappuccino-style drink + extra-shot upcharge (tax included)~$7.25
    Home caffeine-boosted vanilla frappé~$0.83
    Savings per drink$6.42

The syrup batch itself is a one-time ~$1.05 and makes about 12 drinks — see the full syrup recipe for the batch method. Assumptions: grande-size blended drink, national-average chain pricing plus a typical ~$1.00 extra-shot upcharge, dairy milk, $16/lb specialty beans or equivalent grocery beans.

    Swaps & Notes

    • Prefer measured caffeine powder over a second shot? It’s an option, but a genuinely riskier one — pure caffeine powder is extremely concentrated, and the FDA has specifically warned against measuring it by eye or teaspoon; a single mismeasured spoonful has caused documented deaths. If you go this route, use a milligram-capable digital scale, not a measuring spoon, and dose to about 1/16 level tsp (~200mg) added to a single-shot base — that’s already a ~328mg combined total, notably more than the two-shot version above. We recommend the extra-shot method instead; it’s simpler, safer, and self-limiting in a way loose powder isn’t.
    • Watching total caffeine for the day? Use just one double shot of espresso (2oz) instead of two, keeping everything else the same — same texture, about half the caffeine (~128mg instead of ~256mg).
    • Want chocolate instead? See our Caffeine-Boosted Mocha Frappé for the same double-shot approach with real mocha sauce.

    FAQ

How much caffeine is in a normal (non-boosted) vanilla frappé?

About 128mg, from the single double shot of espresso the regular build uses. This recipe roughly doubles that by blending in a second shot.

Is 256mg in one drink safe?

For most healthy adults, yes, in the sense that it’s still under the FDA’s ~400mg/day guidance — but it’s more than half of a full day’s recommended intake in a single serving, so this isn’t meant as a daily-multiple-times build. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, pregnant, or on a caffeine-limiting medication, treat this one the same way you’d treat a genuinely strong energy drink, not a routine coffee.

Can I use caffeine powder instead of a second shot?

You can, but read the Swaps & Notes above first — it’s a meaningfully different risk profile than pulling a second shot, since powder is far more concentrated and easy to over-measure without a proper scale.
