Why ratios differ this much by method

Every brew method is really just water pulling flavor out of ground coffee — the ratio is how concentrated you want that result. Full-immersion and drip methods (pour-over, French press) are sipped as-is, so they land in a lighter 1:12–1:17 range. Espresso is pressurized and short, so it needs far less water for the same intensity: 1:2. Cold brew and phin are deliberately brewed strong — closer to a syrup than a cup — because they're diluted with water, ice, or condensed milk before drinking, not sipped straight off the ratio shown here.

Move the slider within each method's range to taste — the low end (more water) makes a lighter, more delicate cup; the high end (less water) makes it bolder and heavier-bodied. Both ends are "correct," they're just different.

Getting a good ratio is step one. If the shot or cup still tastes off once the ratio's right, that's usually a grind-size problem — try the Grind-Size Diagnostic.
