Ingredients & steps
Clean-IngredientWritten iced. Switch to see the hot version's ingredients and steps.
Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 2 tbsp Maple Condensed Milk Base (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
- Ice (enough to fill a 16oz glass)
- 4oz cold milk
- Optional: a dusting of cinnamon
Steps
- 1.Make a batch of Maple Condensed Milk Base ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge.
- 2.Spoon 2 tbsp of the maple condensed milk base into the bottom of a 16oz glass.
- 3.Fill the glass with ice.
- 4.Pour 4oz cold milk over the ice.
- 5.Pull a double shot of espresso and pour it slowly over the back of a spoon onto the milk so it floats on top instead of mixing in right away.
- 6.Serve with a straw. Stir just before the first sip to combine the layers.

Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Clean-ingredient" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. This version swaps the Standard Spanish Latte’s canned condensed milk for real homemade condensed milk – whole milk and maple syrup, slowly reduced on the stove. Once the base is made, assembly is the same quick layering as every other tier.
What “Clean-Ingredient” Means Here
Real milk, real maple syrup, vanilla, and salt – reduced the way condensed milk is actually made, just without the can, the corn syrup, or the stabilizers. It’s a genuine sourcing upgrade over the Standard tier, at the real cost of about an hour of mostly-hands-off stovetop time instead of opening a can.
Make the Base First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Maple Condensed Milk Base in the fridge – a 70-minute batch (mostly hands-off simmering) that makes about 8 drinks’ worth and keeps about a week. If you haven’t made a batch yet, make that first, then come back here.
Building the Layered (Iced) Version
- Spoon 2 tbsp of the maple condensed milk base into the bottom of a 16oz glass.
- Fill the glass with ice.
- Pour 4oz cold milk over the ice.
- Pull a double shot of espresso and pour it slowly over the back of a spoon onto the milk so it floats on top.
- Serve with a straw, stirred right before drinking.
The base itself is a one-time ~$3.55 and makes about 8 drinks – see the full base recipe for the breakdown. Assumptions: grande-size drink, the same national-average café benchmark used across this site, whole dairy milk and real maple syrup at typical grocery pricing.
Is This Actually “Healthier” Than the Standard Version?
It avoids canned condensed milk’s corn syrup and stabilizers, and it lands a bit lower in calories than the Standard tier (179 vs. 203) – mostly because milk-and-maple is simply less energy-dense than concentrated canned condensed milk, not because this recipe was built to cut calories. Sugar is close to a wash (17g vs. 21g per drink). If lower sugar and calories specifically are your priority, the Sugar-Free Spanish Latte gets you further on both. What this tier actually buys you is ingredient sourcing – a jar you made yourself from two real ingredients, not a can.

FAQ
Is this worth the extra hour versus the Standard tier?
Depends what you’re after. The finished drink is close in flavor to the Standard version, so if speed matters most, the Standard base is the practical choice. This tier is for readers who specifically want to avoid canned condensed milk’s corn syrup and stabilizers and don’t mind the stovetop time to get there.
Why isn’t this dramatically lower in sugar or calories?
Because that’s not really this tier’s goal – it’s about ingredient sourcing, not a nutrition overhaul. It lands a bit lower than Standard incidentally, since milk-and-maple is less calorie-dense than canned condensed milk, but if cutting sugar and calories is the actual priority, the Sugar-Free tier gets you there more directly.
Can I make this hot instead?
Yes – use the Hot/Iced toggle above the ingredients. The hot build stirs the base directly into the espresso instead of layering it over ice.
