Compare the 3 tiers of this drink

Same drink, three ways. Clean-Ingredient is our top recommendation -- Standard and Sugar-Free are the other options.

Uses Maple Chai Concentrate (Clean-Ingredient) — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

Ingredients & steps

Clean-Ingredient

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

Ingredients

  • 4oz Maple Chai Concentrate (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
  • 4oz whole milk (or full-fat oat milk), steamed or frothed
  • Optional: 1-2oz brewed espresso, for a dirty chai
  • Optional: a dusting of cinnamon for topping

Steps

  1. 1.Make a batch of Maple Chai Concentrate ahead of time if you haven't already -- it's a 30-minute batch that keeps about 1 week in the fridge.
  2. 2.Warm 4oz of the maple chai concentrate in a small saucepan or the microwave until hot, but not boiling.
  3. 3.Steam or froth 4oz of whole milk or full-fat oat milk to about 150°F.
  4. 4.Combine the warm concentrate and steamed milk in your cup and stir. For a dirty chai, pull a shot of espresso and add it before the milk.
  5. 5.Dust with cinnamon if using. Serve immediately.

Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Clean-ingredient" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. If you're managing diabetes, a caffeine sensitivity, pregnancy, or another condition, check with a doctor or dietitian before making a recipe part of your routine. Read the full disclaimer.

Our Standard and Sugar-Free chai lattes already skip the pre-mixed concentrate cafés use – so the thing left to upgrade for a whole-ingredient version is what’s actually in the spice base. This tier swaps ground spices for whole cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves slowly steeped, and cane sugar for real maple. No pre-mixed “chai spice blend” of unknown ratios, no ground-spice sediment, and once the concentrate’s made, assembly takes about 2 minutes.

What “Clean-Ingredient” Means Here

Black tea, whole spices, and real maple syrup doing all the work – nothing you’d need a label to identify. We’re upfront below about where it doesn’t win: calories and total sugar land close to the Standard version, because maple syrup isn’t meaningfully lower in either. The upgrade here is ingredient sourcing and a rounder spice flavor, not a nutrition hack.

Café Chai Latte vs. This Version, Honestly Compared
Café grande chai latte$5.75
Home Clean-Ingredient Chai Latte~$1.33
Savings per drink$4.42

The concentrate itself is a one-time ~$6.15 (real maple syrup, whole spices, and loose-leaf tea are the entire cost) and makes about 6 drinks – see the full concentrate recipe for the cost breakdown, which comes out to roughly $1.03 per drink in concentrate alone.

Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing, whole milk, real maple syrup and whole spices at typical grocery pricing. This is the most honest comparison we can give – real maple and whole spices cost more than sugar and ground spices, which is exactly why this tier’s savings are the smallest of the three chai recipes, even though they’re still substantial.

Why This Costs More Than the Other Two Tiers (and Why That’s Fine)

Being straight about the math: this version saves about $0.86 less per drink than the Standard concentrate version and about $0.55 less than the Sugar-Free version, because real maple syrup and whole spices cost more than sugar or a sugar-free sweetener blend. It’s also not lower in calories or total sugar than the Standard version. What you’re paying the premium for is ingredient sourcing and a rounder spice flavor – no pre-mixed blend, no ground-spice grit, nothing you couldn’t name out loud. This is the tier we recommend by default – pick it because you want that, not because we’re pretending it’s the cheapest or lowest-calorie option. It isn’t; the Standard version is cheaper and the Sugar-Free version is far lower in calories.

Want It Dirty? Add a Shot of Espresso

Same rule as every tier on this site: a dirty chai is this concentrate and milk, plus a shot of espresso, nothing else changed. Pull a double shot (about 2oz) and add it to your cup before the milk. It adds about $0.22 and roughly 5 calories – bringing the total to about $1.55/drink, 185 calories.

FAQ

Do I need to make the concentrate every time I want this drink?

No – that’s why it’s its own recipe now. One batch keeps about 1 week in the fridge and covers roughly 6 drinks, so this page is just the quick assembly step.

Is this recipe actually lower in sugar than the Standard version?

Not meaningfully – maple syrup and cane sugar carry a similar amount of sugar per serving. If sugar content specifically is your priority, see the Sugar-Free Chai Latte instead, which is built to minimize it.

Why is this version more expensive than the other two?

Real maple syrup, whole spices, and loose-leaf tea simply cost more per serving than sugar and ground spices do. It’s still a large saving over a café chai latte – just the smallest saving of the three tiers, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than round up the number.
