Same drink, three ways. Clean-Ingredient is our top recommendation -- Standard and Sugar-Free are the other options.

Uses Cocoa-Maple-Peppermint Sauce (Clean-Ingredient) — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.

Ingredients & steps

Written hot. Switch to see the iced version's ingredients and steps.

Ingredients

  • 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
  • 8oz whole milk (or full-fat oat milk), steamed or frothed
  • 2 tbsp Cocoa-Maple-Peppermint Sauce (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge)
  • Optional: whipped cream and crushed candy cane or cocoa powder for topping

Steps

  1. 1.Make a batch of Cocoa-Maple-Peppermint Sauce ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge.
  2. 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee) directly into your serving cup.
  3. 3.Stir in 2 tbsp of the cocoa-maple-peppermint sauce while the espresso is hot until fully combined.
  4. 4.Steam or froth 8oz of whole milk or full-fat oat milk to about 150°F and pour over the espresso mixture.

Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Clean-ingredient" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. If you're managing diabetes, a caffeine sensitivity, pregnancy, or another condition, check with a doctor or dietitian before making a recipe part of your routine. Read the full disclaimer.

Our Standard Peppermint Mocha already uses real unsweetened cocoa powder and pure peppermint extract — so the one thing left to upgrade for a fully whole-ingredient version is the sweetener. This tier swaps the cane-sugar sauce base for real maple syrup. Once the sauce is made, assembly takes about 2 minutes.

What “Clean-Ingredient” Means Here

Real cocoa, real maple syrup, and pure peppermint extract doing all the work. No refined cane sugar, no artificial mint flavoring, nothing you’d need a label to identify. It’s not a “diet” version like our Sugar-Free tier — it’s a rebuilt-from-real-food version, and we’re upfront that calories land a bit higher than the Standard version, because maple syrup isn’t meaningfully lower-calorie than cane sugar. The upgrade here is ingredient sourcing, not a nutrition hack.

Make the Sauce First (Just Once)

This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Cocoa-Maple-Peppermint Sauce in the fridge — a 15-minute batch that makes about 10 drinks’ worth and keeps for 2 weeks. If you haven’t made a batch yet, make that first, then come back here.

Building the Drink

  1. Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) into your cup, or brew a strong coffee/moka pot equivalent.
  2. Stir in 2 tbsp of the cocoa-maple-peppermint sauce while the espresso is hot.
  3. Steam or froth 8oz of whole milk (or full-fat oat milk) to about 150°F and pour over the espresso mixture.
  4. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane or a dusting of cocoa powder if you want the full seasonal café look.
Café Peppermint Mocha vs. This Version, Honestly Compared
Café grande peppermint mocha$6.65
Home Clean-Ingredient Peppermint Mocha~$1.35
Savings per drink$5.30

The sauce itself is a one-time ~$5.33 (cocoa, real maple syrup, and pure peppermint extract are the entire cost) and makes about 10 drinks — see the full sauce recipe for the cost breakdown, which comes out to roughly $0.53 per drink in sauce alone.

Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing for a seasonal peppermint mocha, whole milk, real maple syrup at typical grocery pricing (~$8-9 for a 12oz bottle). This is the most honest comparison we can give — real maple costs more than a cane-sugar sauce, which is exactly why this tier’s savings are the smallest of the three peppermint mocha recipes, even though they’re still substantial.

Why This Costs More Than the Other Two Tiers (and Why That’s Fine)

Being straight about the math: this version saves about $0.40 less per drink than the Standard sauce version and about $0.25 less than the Sugar-Free version, because real maple syrup costs more than sugar or a sugar-free sweetener. It’s also not lower in calories than the Standard version — maple runs about the same or slightly higher per tablespoon than cane sugar. What you’re paying the premium for is ingredient sourcing: no refined sugar, no artificial mint flavoring, nothing you couldn’t name out loud. This is the tier we recommend by default — pick it because you want that, not because we’re pretending it’s the cheapest or lowest-calorie option. It isn’t; the Standard version is cheaper and the Sugar-Free version is lower-calorie.

FAQ

Do I need to make the sauce every time I want this drink?

No — that’s why it’s its own recipe now. One batch keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge and covers roughly 10 drinks, so this page is just the quick assembly step.

Is this recipe actually lower in sugar than the Standard version?

Not meaningfully — maple syrup and cane sugar carry a similar amount of sugar per serving. If sugar content specifically is your priority, see the Sugar-Free Peppermint Mocha instead, which is built to minimize it.

Why is this version more expensive than the other two?

Real maple syrup simply costs more per serving than sugar or a sugar-free sweetener does. It’s still a large saving over a café peppermint mocha — just the smallest saving of the three tiers, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than round up the number.
