Uses Brown Butter Toffee Syrup (Clean-Ingredient) — make a batch ahead of time; it keeps in the fridge for a week or two, so you won't need to make it again for every drink.
Ingredients & steps

Ingredients
- 2oz espresso (or 1/3 cup strong coffee/moka pot equivalent)
- 8oz whole milk (or full-fat oat milk), steamed or frothed
- 2 tbsp Brown Butter Toffee Syrup (make a batch ahead of time -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge)
- Optional: whipped cream and a pinch of flaky sea salt for topping
Steps
- 1.Make a batch of Brown Butter Toffee Syrup ahead of time if you haven't already -- it keeps about 1 week in the fridge (shorter than our other syrups, since this one has real butter in it).
- 2.Pull a double shot of espresso (or brew strong coffee) directly into your serving cup.
- 3.Stir in 2 tbsp of the brown butter toffee syrup while the espresso is hot until fully combined.
- 4.Steam or froth 8oz of whole milk or full-fat oat milk to about 150°F and pour over the espresso mixture.
- 5.Top with whipped cream and a pinch of flaky sea salt if using. Serve immediately.

Not medical or nutrition advice. Calorie figures on this page are estimates based on typical ingredient values, not a lab analysis of your exact batch — they'll shift with the brand of milk, syrup, or protein powder you actually use. "Clean-ingredient" and "sugar-free" describe what's in the recipe, not a health claim. Our Standard and Sugar-Free toffee nut syrups both lean on a bottled toffee/butterscotch extract. This tier skips the bottle: real butter, browned on the stovetop until it turns nutty and toasted, does the flavor work instead. It’s a genuine technique upgrade – and, unusually for a Clean-Ingredient recipe on this site, not the priciest of the three tiers.
What “Clean-Ingredient” Means Here (and What It Doesn’t)
Browning butter is a real, traditional method for a toffee-like flavor, not a substitution trick – that’s the genuine ingredient-sourcing upgrade here. What it doesn’t do: this syrup uses the same amount of brown sugar as the Standard version, so it isn’t lower in sugar, and real butter adds real fat calories on top – this latte runs 311 calories versus the Standard version’s 225. If a lower-calorie or lower-sugar toffee nut latte is your actual goal, the Sugar-Free Toffee Nut Latte is the tier built for that; this one is for readers who specifically want to avoid a bottled extract and don’t mind the calorie tradeoff.
Make the Syrup First (Just Once)
This recipe assumes you already have a jar of Brown Butter Toffee Syrup in the fridge – a 20-minute batch (mostly browning butter and cooling) that makes about 8 drinks’ worth and keeps about 1 week (shorter than our other syrups, since this one has real butter in it). If you haven’t made a batch yet, make that first, then come back here.
Building the Latte
- Pull a double shot of espresso (about 2oz) into your cup, or brew a strong coffee/moka pot equivalent.
- Stir in 2 tbsp of the brown butter toffee syrup while the espresso is hot.
- Steam or froth 8oz of whole milk (or full-fat oat milk) to about 150°F and pour over the espresso mixture.
- Top with whipped cream and a pinch of flaky sea salt if you want the full café look.
The syrup itself is a one-time ~$1.06 (butter and brown sugar, no extract to buy) and makes about 8 drinks – see the full syrup recipe for the breakdown, which comes out to roughly $0.13 per drink in syrup alone.
Assumptions: grande-size drink, national-average café pricing, whole milk, unsalted butter at typical grocery pricing (~$4.50/lb). Interestingly, this tier costs less than our Sugar-Free version ($0.95 vs. $1.12) — real butter and brown sugar are cheaper per batch than a monk fruit/allulose sweetener blend, which flips the usual “Clean-Ingredient is the priciest” pattern seen in our other flavor families.
Why This Isn’t a Sugar or Calorie Win (and Why We’re Saying So)
Being straight about the math: this version has the same added sugar as the Standard latte and runs 86 more calories, because it adds real butter on top of the same amount of brown sugar rather than swapping to a lighter sweetener. That’s a fair trade if what you want is a real, traceable ingredient list and don’t mind the extra calories – and it happens to also be the cheapest of the three tiers to make, since butter is a smaller premium over a bottle of extract than real maple syrup is over sugar in our other flavor families. If sugar or calories are the actual goal, the Sugar-Free Toffee Nut Latte is the tier built for that; if plain low cost is the goal, the Standard version and this one are close enough that either works.

FAQ
Is this actually a healthier toffee nut latte?
It avoids a bottled artificial extract, but it isn’t lower in sugar or calories – it actually runs higher in calories than the Standard version because of the real butter. “Clean-ingredient” here means ingredient sourcing, not a nutrition upgrade. See the honest note above.
Why is this cheaper than the Sugar-Free version, when Clean-Ingredient is usually the priciest tier on this site?
Because the “clean” swap here is real butter replacing a bottle of extract, which is a small cost difference – unlike our vanilla, caramel, and pumpkin Clean-Ingredient recipes, which swap in real maple syrup for cane sugar, a much bigger price jump. Monk fruit/allulose sweetener, used in the Sugar-Free version, simply costs more per batch than butter and brown sugar do.
Do I need to make the syrup every time I want this drink?
No – one batch covers about 8 drinks over about a week. The Brown Butter Toffee Syrup recipe is meant to be made ahead, just replaced a little more often than our other syrups.
